Bankston carries Norfolk St. over Grambling St. 70-63

PHOENIX (AP) — Kris Bankston matched his career high with 20 points and grabbed 10 rebounds as Norfolk State topped Grambling 70-63 at the HBCU Challenge on Monday.

Tyrese Jenkins had 12 points for Norfolk the Spartans (8-1).

AJ Taylor had 16 points and 14 rebounds to pace the Tigers (2-5). Tra’Michael Moton and Danya Kingsby scored 12 points apiece.

State makes new rules for oil field tank batteries

BATON ROUGE (AP) — Louisiana regulators have established new rules for oil field tank batteries after an explosion killed a 14-year-old girl, and plan to identify all such storage tanks across the state to encourage compliance.

The state Department of Natural Resources cited the February death of Zalee Day-Smith when announcing the safety measures last week. The Advocate reported that State Police investigators believe she was sitting on a tank near her mom’s house in the rural Ragley community when it blew up, throwing her into the air and killing her.

A funeral mass for Dr. Barry Petry, 61, will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 1, 2021, in Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, with Rev. Susil Fernando officiating.

Visitation will be held at Miguez Funeral Home today, Tuesday, Nov. 30, 2021, from 4-9 p.m., with a rosary recited at 6 p.m. Visitation will resume Wednesday from 8-9:30 a.m.

Cremation will follow the service.

Red Sox owners reach agreement to buy Pittsburgh Penguins

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Fenway Sports Group has reached an agreement with the Pittsburgh Penguins that would give the conglomerate controlling interest in one of the NHL’s marquee franchises.

The Penguins announced Monday that the two sides have come to terms on a deal, which would need to be approved by the NHL’s Board of Governors. A decision is expected by the end of the year.

Financial details were not released. Sportico valued the Penguins at $845 million last month.

USDA accepting rural broadband loan, grant applications

U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Secretary Tom Vilsack recently announced USDA has begun accepting applications for up to $1.15 billion in loans and grants to help people in rural areas get access to high-speed internet.

The announcement comes on the heels of the recently enacted Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, which provides another nearly $2 billion in additional funding for the ReConnect program. USDA anticipates issuing a new Notice of Funding Opportunity to make the additional funds in the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law available in 2022.

Mrs. Jane was a lifelong resident of Jennings. She was born on May 13, 1947, to James Necessary and Hazel Ruth Daughenbaugh Necessary.

Funeral services for Stanley Cresap Mead of Houston, Texas, will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 4, 2021, at Miguez Funeral Home, with Rev. Keith Pellerin officiating.

Mrs. Mead passed away Tuesday, Oct. 26, 2021, at her home in Houston, Texas.

Interment will be held in Houston, Texas.

She was born May 13, 1946, to Stanley and Liz Eubank Cresap. Stanley married Ralph Mead 53 years ago in Jennings.

Seniors treated to holiday lunch

In the spirit of giving, some of the city’s senior citizens were treated last week to a catered Thanksgiving lunch and an afternoon of togetherness.

Westminster Homes board member Charlie Williams said the Welsh Presbyterian Church provided lunch for the residents at the facility last week.

“This was the best day I ever had on the board,” Williams said. “The event was really well-received. People had a great time over a great meal.”
