PGA Tour ups ante as prize money pushes toward $500 million

(AP) — The PGA Tour is raising purses even higher in five of its biggest events, with two FedEx Cup playoff events now offering $15 million in a schedule that pushes prize money closer to the $500 million mark this year.

The increases, which include $12 million purses in the three invitational tournaments, were approved at a board meeting two weeks ago in Houston and outlined in a memo PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan sent to players on Monday.

Louisiana-Monroe tops Northwestern State 96-66

RUSTON, La. (AP) — Nika Metskhvarishvili, Trey Boston and Koreem Ozier scored 15 points apiece as Louisiana-Monroe easily defeated Northwestern State 96-66 on Monday.

Andre Jones had 13 points for ULM (2-2). Elijah Gonzales tied a career high with 10 assists.

Cedric Garrett had 13 points for the Demons (1-5). Kendal Coleman added 10 points.

Local FFA members recognized

Two parish school clubs have been making a name for themselves by working hard and winning competitions on a national level.

At the recent Jeff Davis Parish School Board (JDSB) meeting, Elton High School (EHS) and Jennings High School (JHS) Future Farmers of America (FFA) members were praised for their hard work and dedication. Multiple teams from both schools placed at this year’s FFA National Convention.

JDSB Superintendent Kirk Credeur said he was very proud of the student’s accomplishments.

Nurse Nightingale

Led by faith and driven by a purpose, Dr. Dana Clawson Vincent says she has achieved more than she ever imagined.

Receiving the Nightingale Award for Nursing School Administrator of the Year was something Vincent earned after years of dedication and hard work. This prestigious award is given by the Louisiana State Nurses Association (LSNA) and only one award is given in the state each year.

Originally from Haughton, she is married to Matthew Vincent of Jennings.

Hounds fall valiantly to No.3 General Trass, 40-20

WELSH – The No. 19 Welsh Greyhounds squared off with a juggernaut in No. 3 General Trass at Greyhound Stadium Friday night in a Regional Round showdown in the Class 2A state playoffs. The Hounds gave the undefeated Panthers everything they wanted, but a slew of big plays allowed General Trass to advance to the quarterfinal round where they will host the Amite Warriors. The Greyhounds end their terrific season with a mark of 7-5, a year after winning only one contest in 2020.

Can you force beauty?

There are those who say you cannot force beauty — but I beg to differ. There are many beautiful bulbs out there that we can encourage to come out of dormancy by manipulating their environment, coaxing them to share their beauty even before they are naturally ready.

Spring-flowering bulbs can be tricked, or “forced,” into blooming indoors. The term forcing refers to the act of tricking bulbs into believing that it’s time to bloom. This can be done both indoors and outdoors. Forcing is done by providing favorable environmental conditions for growing.

Saints without Kamara, both offensive tackles vs. Eagles

METAIRIE (AP) — Saints running back Alvin Kamara will miss his second straight game Sunday in Philadelphia, and New Orleans also will be without starting tackles Terron Armstead and Ryan Ramczyk.

In addition to listing those three prominent players as out on Friday’s injury report, the Saints also made a change at kicker. New Orleans waived rookie Brian Johnson, who missed two extra point kicks in last week’s 23-21 loss at Tennessee, and elevated recently resigned kicker Brett Maher from the practice squad to the active roster.
