KC awards Cox for soccer championship win

At the Knights of Columbus (KC) State Youth Soccer Challenge held in Baton Rouge Nov. 14, Hudd Cox (right) won the state championship in the 11 year old boys category. Hudd advanced to the state championship, by winning the KC Council 2012 competition on Sept. 25 and the Lake Charles Diocese championship on Oct. 16.

Hudd is a sixth grade student at Jennings Elementary School. He plays both soccer and football in the Jennings Recreation League. He is the son of Wayne and Brandi Cox.

GRANTS RECEIVED FOR RECREATION UPGRADE

LAKE ARTHUR — Residents here may soon notice some new features in their town parks.

The Lake Arthur Board of Aldermen was presented with a $15,000 rural development grant to be used for recreation from District 25 Senator Jerry Theunissen and District 37 Representative Dan Morrish during their regular meeting Wednesday night.

Mayor E.R. "Red" Giles said the grant money will be used to fund new and improved equipment and facilities at Lake Arthur Park and West End Park.

Old time medicine show to benefit Jennings reserves

Jennings residents will be treated to an old time show as the Jennings Police Reserves presents "Doc" Tommy Scott's Last Real Medicine Show to be held at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 1, at the Jennings High School Auditorium.

According to Reserve Vice President Steve Cormier, the show will feature tons of fun and music including sharp shooting, juggling and magic with "Gong the Gorilla." The show will also feature Ole Bleb and Snake Oil Band and a special added attraction will be the "search for talent contest."

FIRE CAUSES $8,000 IN DAMAGES

A fire at the Bill Hennigan residence, 531 Lucy St., caused an estimated $8,000 in damages Tuesday night.

The fire was confined mainly to a bedroom, according to Fire Chief Charles Hill.

Hill said the fire stared during a time when the family was away from home. They had been in the room only a few hours before to dress for the evening, the family said.

Neighbors saw smoke pouring out of the windows and notified the fire department.

Millican tells Goretti history

Jennings city attorney Jeff Millican told a group of 100 persons gathered last night in Jennings for the Goretti School fundraising supper that the purpose of the night was to initiate the Endowment Fund for the school.

Tracing the school’s history, Millican said grades one through three were opened in 1955 at the Goretti school with 144 students and six teachers who were the Oliveta Benedictine Sisters.

Nomination deadline for Agriculture Hall of Distinction approaching

BATON ROUGE — The Louisiana Agriculture Hall of Distinction is still accepting nominations through Dec. 3 for its induction ceremony, which will be held March 24, 2022, in Baton Rouge.

(AP) — President Joe Biden remains “healthy” and “vigorous” and fit for duty, but is showing some signs of aging, his doctor said Friday after the oldest president in American history underwent his first routine physical in office and — in a history-making moment — briefly transferred power to Vice President Kamala Harris while he underwent a colonoscopy.

Harris, the first woman, first Black person and first person of South Asian descent to be vice president, was — for one hour and 25 minutes — acting president while Biden was under anesthesia.

La. lawmakers: Strain too slow on medical marijuana

BATON ROUGE (AP) — Louisiana Agriculture Commissioner Mike Strain came under fire Thursday from state lawmakers who complained his regulatory agency was moving too slowly in expanding the medical marijuana products available to patients.

The News-Star reports that Strain, a Republican, told a special legislative commission looking at the state’s medicinal pot program that he won’t compromise public safety to fast-track new products.
