Lady Hornets drop close one to Midland

MIDLAND — The Hathaway Lady Hornets basketball team traveled to play the Midland Lady Rebels Friday night in a district game. Midland bolted out to a 22-10 led and would lead 33-31 at halftime. Hathaway led 44-40 in the third period, but Midland would make a fourth period comeback to take a 64-63 win.

Lady Tigers demolish Grand Lake, 71-12

LAKE ARTHUR — The Lake Arthur Lady Tigers kept their winning ways up on Friday as they belted the Grand Lake Hornets in a district contest by a final of 71-12 at “Nookie” Moore Gymnasium. With the win, Lake Arthur moves to 18-4 overall and is sitting at No.4 in the latest Division IV non-select power ratings. Senior guard Vivian Sketoe led the Lady Tiger charge by popping in a game-high 23 points.

Thomas’ 26 leads Cards to big win over Bell City

BELL CITY — The Lacassine Cardinals kept their winning ways going last week as they traveled to Bell City and left with a 78-43 win over the Bruins. The No. 2-ranked Cards moved their sparkling record out to 28-1 on the season, 2-0 in league play. Bell City dropped to 7-12 overall on the season with the lopsided loss. The Cardinals placed four players in double figures, while knocking down 12 3-point buckets in the contest. Alexx Thomas led the way for Lacassine by pumping in a game-high 26 points, including four of the 12 3-point missiles. Lacassine was set to be back in action on Tuesday night when they took on the Hathaway Hornets in a big Jeff Davis Parish showdown.

School board announces closures

Due to the extreme temperatures, wind chill and possible water supply issues at parish schools over the next 24 hours, Jeff Davis Parish schools will be closed on Tuesday, Jan. 16, according to Superintendant John Hall. If further closures are necessary, school officials will make an announcement.
