Jeff Davis Parish 4-H, FFA Livestock Show results announced

The 2024 Jeff Davis Parish Livestock Show was held January 12 – 13 and January 19 – 20 at the Glenn Daigle Arena in Jennings. Market lambs and commercial ewes, broilers and meat pen rabbits, along with market and breeding swine and goats, were shown on January 13. All beef cattle, which includes market steers, commercial heifers, dairy breeding and commercial cattle, were shown on January 20.

Shoe shop moves to Viator Bldg.

1927 - M. L. McMillan, shoe repair man, moved his shop from the “Tire Shop” building to the store room formerly occupied by the Viator Fruit stand, on Main Street, opposite the More Milage Station. Mr. McMillan says that he is better prepared than ever to give good service in all branches of shoe repair work.

No. 2 Cardinals roll through Bell City, 82-40

LACASSINE — The Lacassine Cardinals kept their winning ways alive this week by pummeling the Bell City Bruins by a final of 82-40 from John Juneau Gymnasium. The Cards upped their sparkling mark to 32-2 overall, and currently sit at No. 2 in the latest Division V non-select power ratings. Lacassine placed a trio of starters in double figures, including Kane Broussard, Jordan Garcia and Alexx Thomas. The Cards were also able to bury 11 3-pointers in the contest.

Levi, Tigers edge Kinder 58-48

LAKE ARTHUR —The Lake Arthur Tigers made it three in a row on Thursday night by topping the Kinder Yellow Jackets by a final of 58-48 from “Nookie” Moore Gymnasium. It was the Ray Levi show here Thursday night, as the senior forward poured in 34 of the Tigers’ 58 points in the win. The win upped the Tigers’ overall mark to 12-10, and currently sit at No. 12 in the latest Division IV nonselect power ratings.

PUNXSUTAWNEY PHIL PREDICTS AN EARLY SPRING

PUNXSUTAWNEY,Pa. (AP) — Punxsutawney Phil has forecasted an early spring from the largest and bestknown Groundhog Day celebration in the United States at an overcast Gobbler’s Knob in western Pennsylvania. The annual event was held shortly after sunrise on Friday. It's a tonguein- cheek ritual in which Phil’s handlers reveal whether the groundhog has seen his shadow. This year, they say the rodent did not see his shadow and that will usher in early springlike weather. They say when he does see his shadow, that presages six more weeks of winter. Phil predicts more winter far more often than he sees an early spring. A federal agency took a look at his record last year and put his accuracy rate at about 40%.

School board pilot program going strong

For the first time in Jeff Davis Parish, Jennings High School (JHS) students were able to participate in a program that included hands-on experiences in the education field.
