School board will have feeding program

The Jeff Davis Parish School Board has decided it will implement a food program for students for possibly four weeks while campus cafeterias are closed.

At a meeting Tuesday night, board members said they agreed with the feeding concerns of Kirk Credeur, superintendent of parish schools. On Monday he said a lack of available employees, heightened costs and transportation concerns would make it difficult to provide daily meals.

Covid 19 closures reported around parish

Statewide emergency declarations are impacting local offices and businesses, with closures, shorter hours and restrictions in place. This includes a parish-wide curfew that is in place from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. until further notice.

COA still offering services at this time

Many senior citizens depend on services provided by the local Council on Aging (COA). Like many other facilities across the country, the COA has been closed under direct orders from the governor.

“The governor’s office has ordered all COA meal sites, offices and senior centers to be closed,” said Director Helen Langley. “Our staff will still be on hand to answer phone calls but no clients will be allowed to enter.”

Langley said that although the doors are closed, they will still be available to assist some residents.

United Way’s 211 Crisis Line officially taking coronovirus calls

The United Way of Southwest Louisiana is bracing for the Coronavirus impact. The worldwide agency is in touch with state and national leaders about the global pandemic.

SWLA United Way is warning the community that scam artists are trying to take advantage of nonprofits and consumers during the heightened attention to the coronavirus.

Emergency declaration puts price gouging laws in effect

With the governor declaring a public health emergency due to the coronavirus, Attorney General Jeff Landry encourages Louisiana consumers to be conscious of price gouging.

Schools wait for guidance on closures

As of now public schools are shuttered until April 20 due to coronavirus concerns, but campus custodians in Jeff Davis Parish were at work Monday morning doing extra cleaning.
