Let’s work together to make work zones safe for all

Last week an employee for a state contractor was killed on the Atchafalya Bridge when a vehicle in a work zone allegedly collided with equipment that ultimately made impact with the worker.

The worker was helping to conduct joint repairs during non-peak driving hours. This is a somber reminder that safety of the roadway is of the utmost importance and that drivers must be extra diligent when in or approaching work zones.

State should help with rural roads and bridges

This month a national study ranked Louisiana as the fifteenth in the nation for having 19 percent of our rural roads and bridges rated in poor condition.

A study completed by the National Transportation Research Group reported Louisiana’s rural roads and bridges have significant deficiencies and high fatality rates, and that repairs and modernization are needed in order to improve conditions, boost safety and support growth.

The report found that 15 percent of our state’s rural bridges are rated as structurally deficient, the sixth highest share in the U.S.

Remember those who gave all

Dear Editor,

Due to the recent flooding events with the help of the media, it seemed some individuals took complete advantage of the farmers’ misfortune here in Jeff Davis Parish. The flooding sent crawfish out of ponds and individuals out to get them. The farmers did not mind the individuals taking the crawfish from the ditches. However, they did not deserve the destruction and thefts these individuals brought.

Applications open for LSU AgCenter Leadership Program

The program is accepting applications for Class XVII, which will begin in January 2020.
