Louisiana’s unemployment rate dropped again to 3.5 percent in April, which represents the lowest on record according to new data released from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Louisiana also had its lowest number of unemployed persons on record.

Compared to March 2018, the nonseasonally adjusted unemployment rate decreased by nearly a percentage point in Louisiana. The over-the-year drop was tied for the sixth largest drop in the country.

Memorial Day grilling safety stressed

In addition to a holiday when many Americans will be honoring fallen soldiers for their sacrifice, Memorial Day weekend is often the first time families take out the grill for the first time.

According to the National Fire Protection Agency (NFPA) seven out of every 10 adults in the U.S. use a grill or a smoker. While this translates to a lot of tasty meals, there is also an increased risk of home fires.

During my childhood, the lengthening days of spring which gave way to summer were thick with humidity and with opportunity. Lightning bugs affirmed the approach of June, July and August when the school doors would close, and the refrigerator doors would open wide with lemonade and Jell-O.

It was a magical time.

That is why it is so gratifying--some 50 years later--to be visited by the descendants of those same lightning bugs.

Dairy farmers and Mike Strain, commissioner of the Louisiana Department of Agriculture and Forestry, are pressuring lawmakers to enact “truth in labeling” legislation.

Some farmers claim use of the word “milk” when describing items like soy, coconut and almond milk has had a negative financial impact on their industry.

I love dairy products but I’m slightly offended Old MacDonald is suggesting the average person does not know milk alternatives and dairy are not one and the same.

Patty’s Place is a small downtown restaurant that serves lunch from 11 to 4. The place is busy, but quick, clean and pleasant. Patty cooks everything herself, the menu is short and the regular customers love it.

Her specialty is a large wedge of crustless green-chile quiche with a side salad and a thick slice of her own bread slathered with butter. She has other items on the menu, but most people come for the quiche. It’s all the regulars order.
