Deer hunters cautioned on use of deer urine lures

The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries is cautioning deer hunters about the use of deer urine lures because of the potential these products could contain chronic wasting disease (CWD). CWD is a neurodegenerative disease found in most deer species, including moose, elk, mule deer and white-tailed deer. It is infectious and always fatal.

CWD has not been discovered in Louisiana but has been in 25 states including Texas, Arkansas, and Mississippi.

LDWF announces White Lake Wetlands Conservation Area 2018 youth waterfowl lottery hunts

The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) is accepting applications for the 2018 youth waterfowl lottery hunts on White Lake Wetlands Conservation Area (WCA) in Vermilion Parish.

There is no charge for the LDWF-sponsored hunts on Nov. 3 and Nov. 4, provided as a quality experience for young waterfowl hunters. The participants in the hunts will be determined by a lottery drawing.

Applications for the lottery should be submitted to LDWF before close of business on Sept. 14, 2018.

VOTING MACHINE VENDOR ESTIMATES UP TO $95M COST

BATON ROUGE (AP) — The company chosen by Louisiana to replace thousands of state voting machines estimates the work could cost up to $95 million, significantly larger than prior estimates. Louisiana’s state procurement office announced that Dominion Voting Systems was the winning vendor.

BEDMINSTER, N.J. (AP) — President Donald Trump discussed prison reform with governors and state attorneys general at his New Jersey golf club Thursday.

The mostly Republican group included Govs. Matt Bevin of Kentucky, Nathan Deal of Georgia, Phil Bryant of Mississippi, Doug Burgum of North Dakota and John Bel Edwards, a Louisiana Democrat. Also attending were Republican attorneys general Pam Bondi of Florida and Ken Paxton of Texas.

Welsh officials: Volunteers needed if Lagniappe to continue

WELSH - Officials here would like to see how many volunteers are willing to commit before setting any plans for a 2019 Lagniappe Festival in stone.

This year’s event was cancelled because of a lack of volunteers. Aldermen had also asked those willing to serve on a festival planning committee to contact city hall, but only one person stepped forward.

Former alderman Charles Drake, who has spearheaded the Lagniappe Festival for several years, said the biggest task of the threeday event is finding people to man drink booths.
