Soil health, cover crops to be covered at sugarcane field day

JEANERETTE — The LSU AgCenter has scheduled a soil health and cover crop workshop for July 26 in conjunction with a sugarcane field day for Iberia, St. Mary and Vermilion parishes.

Sponsored by the LSU AgCenter, the Louisiana Master Farmer Program and the Natural Resources Conservation Service, the workshop is the third in a series that previously were held in northeast and central Louisiana in January.

AgCenter field day expo offers new forum for ag info

WINNSBORO — The LSU AgCenter hosted its first-ever field day expo on June 19 in Winnsboro, expanding the concept of a traditional row crop field day to include information on horticulture programs, wildlife and other topics.

About 160 people came to the expo at the AgCenter Tom H. Scott Research, Extension and Education Center.

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Former first lady Michelle Obama will discuss her upcoming memoir “Becoming” as she kicks off the American Library Association’s annual conference in New Orleans. Librarian of Congress Dr. Carla Hayden will moderate a conversation Friday with Obama at the city’s convention center.

Obama’s book chronicles the experiences that have shaped her, from her childhood on the South Side of Chicago to her years as an executive and her time at the White House.

Store employee accused of making bomb threat

An employee at the Jennings Walmart was booked just after midnight Friday for allegedly making a bomb threat to the store.

Tyler Lantier, 25, of Estherwood is charged with terrorizing.

Around 6:45 p.m. Thursday, management at the store notified the Jeff Davis Parish Sheriff’s Office and the Jennings Police Department that someone had written “bomb in the store” on the wall of one of the restrooms, Jennings interim police chief Danny Semmes said. As per protocol during a bomb threat, the store was evacuated.

Meagan Savoie and Josh Sonnier fell in love as teenagers, she a freshman and he a senior at Lake Arthur High. They became friends in the fall of 2007 then a couple in March 2008. They married June 20, 2014, and are approaching their fourth anniversary. They both have received degrees from McNeese State University, with Josh earning his in 2011 in agribusiness and Meagan in 2015 in nursing.

Uniform policy change to allow leggings, earrings

Jeff Davis students can expect a few changes to the parish’s uniform policy, most notably revisions allowing girls to wear leggings and boys to wear earrings.

The school board unanimously approved the changes during a Thursday meeting. The revisions were suggested by a majority of educators and principals, according to superintendent of schools Kirk Credeur.

The Word: Exhibit details evolution of books

Zigler Art Museum will host the “Reading The World: Tablet to Tablet” exhibit from Thursday, July 5, to Tuesday, July 3. The Calcasieu Parish Library loaned the exhibit to the museum.

The exhibit consists of 10 displays, which take the viewer through the evolution of books and how different cultures have contributed to the world through written word.

Ankle monitors lead cops to suspects

Jennings police arrested two male juveniles Wednesday after they allegedly held a third unnamed juvenile at gunpoint before robbing him.

The two suspects, who were both on juvenile probation at the time of the alleged robbery, were captured because of the GPS on their ankle monitor bracelets, interim police chief Danny Semmes said.

“These two were wearing ankle bracelets because they were not supposed to leave their homes,” Semmes said. “Because of GPS, we were able to locate them easily.”
