Surgeon general urges Americans to carry overdose antidote

ATLANTA (AP) — The nation’s chief doctor wants more Americans to start carrying the overdose antidote naloxone to help combat the nation’s opioid crisis and save lives.

Speaking at the National Rx Drug Abuse & Heroin Summit in Atlanta on Thursday morning, U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Jerome Adams issued his office’s first national public health advisory in 13 years.

Adams said he hopes those who are at risk — as well as their friends and family members — will keep the antidote on hand and learn how to use it.

Woods back at Masters, playing with early leader Leishman

AUGUSTA, Ga. (AP) — Tiger Woods gave galleries at Augusta National something to cheer for in his first round at the Masters in three years.

Playing partner Marc Leishman provided even more highlights.

Leishman birdied three of his first seven holes and was 3 under at the turn while playing alongside the main attraction at the first major of 2018.

Dog owners get $75K in pact over deputy’s canine killing

BATON ROUGE (AP) — The owners of a dog that was shot and killed by a Louisiana sheriff’s deputy will receive $75,000 in a settlement of their lawsuit against a sheriff who has had legal troubles.

The settlement isn’t an “admission of liability” by Iberia Parish Sheriff Louis Ackal and Deputy Lucas Plauche, says the March 26 release signed by the dog’s owners, Teddy Sonnier and his son, Brance.

China lists $50B of US goods it may hit with tariff

BEIJING (AP) — China on Wednesday issued a $50 billion list of U.S. goods including soybeans and small aircraft for possible tariff hikes in an escalating and potentially damaging technology dispute with Washington.

The country’s tax agency gave no date for the 25 percent increase to take effect and said it will depend on what President Donald Trump does about U.S. plans to raise duties on a similar amount of Chinese goods.

YouTube shooter told family she ‘hated’ the company

SAN BRUNO, Calif. (AP) — A woman who believed she was being suppressed by YouTube and told her family members she “hated” the company opened fire at the company’s headquarters in California, wounding three people before killing herself, police said.

Investigators do not believe Nasim Aghdam specifically targeted the three victims when she pulled out a handgun and fired several rounds in a courtyard at YouTube’s headquarters south of San Francisco on Tuesday, police said.

Trump advisers urge against hasty US retreat from Syria

WASHINGTON (AP) — With a decision seemingly imminent about whether to bring home U.S. troops from Syria, President Donald Trump’s national security team is advising against a hasty withdrawal even as he makes his preference clear: “I want to get out.”

Trump’s director of national intelligence, Dan Coats, told reporters Wednesday that the White House would announce a decision about America’s military involvement in the war-torn country “relatively soon.” Coats said national security officials held an “all-hands-on deck” meeting Tuesday and “some decisions were made.”

France puts 78,000 security threats on vast police database

PARIS (AP) — France has flagged more than 78,000 people as security threats in a database intended to let European police share information on the continent’s most dangerous residents — more than all other European countries put together — according to an analysis by The Associated Press.
