Senior class to host drug-free graduation party

The parents of the senior class at Welsh High School will host a drug- and alcohol-free party after graduation for graduating seniors. The party, which will be held May 16, will begin at 11 p.m. and will feature music, games, finger foods and prizes. Anyone interested in contributing to the event with cash or prizes is asked to make checks payable to WHS Class of 2018. Checks can be mailed to P.O. Box 181, Welsh, LA 70591.

COA to host Country Store fundraiser

Fans of informal sales and reasonable prices have something to look forward to later this week.

The Jeff Davis Council on Aging (COA) will hold its Country Store fundraiser Thursday, April 5 from 7 a.m. to noon at its home on State Street. Items donated by the community will be on sale for the public to peruse and purchase.

Kim Landry, activities director for the COA, said she refers to the fundraiser as a “country store” because she wanted something slightly different from a regular garage sale.

North Texas company recalls nearly 4 tons of raw beef items

FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) — A North Texas company has recalled nearly 4 tons (3.63 metric tons) of raw beef wrongly produced and packaged without federal inspection.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture says the recall involves PFP Enterprises, operating as Texas Meat Packers of Fort Worth. The recall involves 7,146 pounds (3,241 kilograms) of various-weight beef for tacos and fajitas produced March 23 and March 24. The lack of inspection was discovered Friday.

SUV plunge off cliff may have been intentional, police say

MENDOCINO, Calif. (AP) — An SUV carrying a large family from Washington state accelerated straight off a scenic California cliff and authorities said the deadly wreck may have been intentional.

The wreck was discovered last week, days after child welfare authorities began investigating whether the children were being neglected.

Information pulled from the vehicle’s software shows it was stopped at a flat, dirt pull-off area before it sped off the steep rocky face and plunged 100 feet (30 meters), said Capt. Greg Baarts with the California Highway Patrol Northern Division.

Man charged with carnal knowledge of 13-year-old

A Jennings man was arrested early Saturday by the Jennings Police Department for allegedly having sexual intercourse with a 13-year-old girl.

Michael Sonnier, 18, was arrested and charged with carnal knowledge of a juvenile.

Around 1:52 a.m. Saturday, an officer of the Jennings Police Department who was conducting regular patrols on Academy Avenue saw a Chevy Impala parked at the recreation park. The officer had reason to suspect that something of a sexual nature was taking place inside the vehicle, interim Chief Danny Semmes said.

VIETNAM WAR VETS HONORED

Vietnam War veterans around the nation were honored Thursday, March 29, a day that President Donald Trump officially recognized as National Vietnam War Veterans Day on March 28.

The Southwest Louisiana Veterans Home held a pinning ceremony to honor the 62 residents there who took part in the Vietnam War. Matthew Duhon, the administrator of the Southwest Louisiana Veterans Home, spoke on the importance of this new national holiday and the special meaning it has to Vietnam War veterans.
