New team of Tiger All-Stars announced

The Lake Arthur High School (LAHS) Jr High Tiger All-Stars cheer/dance team recently held their tryouts for the new 2018-2019 team. There were 22 cheer hopefuls and two manager candidates who attended a short try-out clinic with the team’s coach, Ashley Lutyhe, prior to the tryouts. The two-day clinic was set up to help the candidates learn the dance routine, jump sequence, group cheer, and any technical skills needed. Each hopeful was required to demonstrate their own chant, which they came up with on their own, as well as a running tumbling sequence and also standing tumbling.

The Lake Arthur Elementary School (LAES) 4-H Club recently attended the parish achievement day event on Friday, March 16 with other 4-H Clubs from across the parish. The fun filled event took place at the Jeff Davis Parish Fair Grounds in Jennings.

Officials release report on Fenton audit

FENTON – The Louisiana Legislative Auditor (LLA) is now several months intuits investigation of the village after errors in a 2016 audit, officials said after releasing an official report Monday.

The audit, which details the village’s finances for the year spanning July 1, 2015, to June 30, 2016, contained 14 errors, so many in fact that the certified public accountant agency contracted to complete the audit had to give a disclaimer opinion, meaning they were able to give no official opinion, Director of Local Government for LLA Brad Cryer said.

Man dies in ATV accident

One man was pronounced dead when the four-wheeler he was riding overturned on top of him.

According to Jeff Davis Parish Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Chris Ivey, on Sunday at approximately 1:30 p.m., 76-year-old John T. Mayes of Kinder was traveling south on Parish Line Road on an embankment between a ditch and a drainage canal.

City to levy damages against trash provider

The city of Jennings will begin levying damages against garbage disposal provider Republic Services for various breaches of the waste collection contract between the two entities.

Mayor Henry Guinn said this contract describes liquidation damages which the city, the owner of the contract, may collect from Republic Service, the contractor, for each breach. He said these damages would encourage executives as well as garbage collectors to better perform their duties.

Fire consumes family home

A Jennings family lost their home Monday night after a grease fire spread out of control.

Jennings Fire Department chief Hulin Theriot said about 20 firefighters from his agency and Fire Dist. 2 out of Hathaway responded just after 6 p.m. to a fire at 611 LeDoux Street.

“Heavy smoke and fire was coming out of the front window of the residence when we arrived there,” he said. “It seems that the fire was ignited by a covered pot of grease that overheated on the stove.”

Members of Our Savior’s Church have been preparing for the Eggdrop Eggstravaganza by placing candy in thousands of plastics eggs to be used at the event, which will take place this Saturday from 11 a.m to 2 p.m. at 1206 E. Academy Avenue in Jennings.
