LAKE ARTHUR – No errors were found in the housing authority’s 2016-2017 audit here, which was released by the Louisiana Legislative Auditor’s Office (LLAO) Monday.

The audit which details the housing authority’s finances for the year between Oct. 1, 2016, and Sep. 30 2017, found no errors in accounting. Because of slight increases in Housing and Urban Development (HUD) funds, and despite of slightly lower rental revenues for the year, the housing authority shows a healthy financial outlook for the department, which operates low-income housing for the town.

BATON ROUGE (AP) — A bill that would give people more room to sue when someone dies from hazing is heading to the full Louisiana Senate for debate.

Sen. Dan Claitor’s bill passed a Senate judiciary committee Tuesday. The proposal would allow people to claim additional legal damages if a hazing death is determined to be caused by a reckless disregard for the victim’s safety. The Baton Rouge Republican says he thinks the threat of costly civil lawsuits will deter dangerous hazing activity.

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) — Generators are still humming. Candles are still flickering. Homes are still being repaired.

Puerto Rico was hit by Hurricane Maria exactly six months ago, and the U.S. territory is still struggling to recover from the strongest storm to hit the island in nearly a century.

“There are a lot of people with needs,” said Levid Ortiz, operating director of PR4PR, a local nonprofit that helps impoverished communities across the island. “It shouldn’t be like this. We should already be back on our feet.”
