Patriots thump Dogs 39-6 in Friday night opener

The Jennings Bulldogs capped off their preseason Friday night by taking on arguably the most storied football program in the state of Louisiana in the John Curtis Christian Patriots. The Patriots were able to flex their muscles in a 39-6 victory over the Dogs in a game that featured two 12-minute halves of football. The talented Patriots fired on all cylinders in the win, however the Dogs displayed the ability to fight back but suffered through some crucial penalties and mistakes.

Kaplan dominant in LA jamboree

LAKE ARTHUR – The Lake Arthur Tigers ran into a buzz saw Thursday night in the Acadia/Vermillion Jamboree held at Jack Doland Memorial Stadium. The Kaplan Pirates scored early and often in their 33-13 victory over the Tigers in the shortened game. The Pirates scored 25 unanswered first-half points, before the Tigers were able to put up two scored in the second half to make the final 33-13. Lake Arthur Head Coach Tarius Davis discussed his team’s performance, and pointed to continuing to get better on both sides of the football.

Football season is officially upon us, and like many enthusiasts all over the country, the gridiron game is king here in Jeff Davis Parish. After a tumultuous 2020 season that left teams in limbo, coaches, players and fans alike are hoping for a return to normalcy in 2021. WELSH — The Welsh Greyhounds and the Elton Indians locked up in the final dress rehearsal before the start of the regular season here Thursday night, with the homestanding Greyhounds gaining a 21-13 win over the Indians. The two teams faced off in two 10-minute halves.

Iota dominant in 21-6 win over Eunice

EUNICE - The visiting Iota Bulldogs took advantage of 3 turnovers to defeat the Eunice Bobcats 21-6 in the Bobcat Jamboree Thursday night in Eunice. Bulldog running back Tyler Charlot carried the ball for all three of Iota’s touchdowns.

Etienne Jr. suffers season-ending injury in New Orleans

The Jacksonville Jaguars have lost one of their 2021 firstround picks for the entire season. During their preseason matchup against the New Orleans Saints on Monday night, rookie running back Travis Etienne suffered a serious Lisfranc injury that will end his season before it could begin, according to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network. It was originally thought Etienne could have surgery and potentially return late in the season, but the Jaguars placed him on injured reserve on Tuesday, which means he will not be allowed to return this year.

Dogs building off scrimmage with Barbe

The Jennings Bulldogs had their annual scrimmage with the powerful Barbe Buccaneers last Thursday in Lake Charles, and after a rough start against the potent hosts’ offense, the Dogs settled in and showed glimpses of what could be in 2021. Playing without a few injured Bulldogs in the contest, and having a ton of newcomers who missed all of junior varsity football in 2020 due to Covid-19, Jennings Head Coach Rusty Phelps was pleased with what he saw.

Bregman scores winning run in 10th as Astros down KC 6-5

HOUSTON (AP) — Alex Bregman had two hits and an RBI in his first action in more than two months, and he scored the winning run in the 10th inning on a groundout by Jake Meyers to lift the Houston Astros to a 6-5 win over the Kansas City Royals on Wednesday. Kyle Tucker singled with no outs in the 10th to send automatic runner Bregman to third. Meyers then hit a comebacker that struck pitcher Joel Payamps (0-3) and pulled him toward first base. Payamps tossed the ball to first for the meaningless out as Bregman slid home.

Jaguars make Trevor Lawrence starting QB

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) — Urban Meyer figured Trevor Lawrence would be his starting quarterback long before he even took the Jacksonville job.

But Meyer insisted Lawrence earn the spot, whether his goal was to send a message to his young team or set a tone for his NFL tenure. So Meyer staged a sometimes laughable “competition” during offseason workouts, training camp and the preseason.

Meyer finally ended the charade Wednesday by naming Lawrence the team’s starter for the season opener at Houston on Sept. 12, one of the least surprising decisions in franchise history.

Top SEC contenders breaking in newish quarterbacks

(AP) — Alabama’s primary challengers in the Southeastern Conference can’t take too much heart from the Crimson Tide breaking in an inexperienced quarterback.

They’re in a similar boat.

There is a new group of passers at the top of the league, but the same expectations exist. The SEC has won three of the last four national titles, including dominating runs of perfection from the topranked Crimson Tide last season and LSU in 2019.

Georgia coach Kirby Smart even quoted Henry David Thoreau, though it could easily have come from his Alabama’s Nick Saban.
