VVA receives $5K donation to help replace stolen trailer

Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 1058 in Jennings received a $5,000 donation to help replace items that were missing or damaged when the group’s utility trailer was stolen late last year.

Jeff Davis Bank read about the theft in Jennings Daily News and decided to help the group. Boyd Boudreaux, president and CEO, said the company aims to help important groups like Vietnam Veterans of America.

LONGVILLE - The Jennings Bulldogs picked up arguably their biggest win of the season Friday with a 15-5 dismantling of the South Beauregard Knights.

The Knights entered the contest with a No. 2 rating in last week’s LHSAA Class 3A power ratings and were 25-4 on the season and 5-3 in District 4-3A play.

“This was that signature victory that we really needed,” said JHS coach James Estes. “We have been up and down all season long and we really needed a game like this to get that confidence back. You know, the game is 90 percent mental so this is a big boost for us.”

Mainieri earns 1,400th win of career

BATON ROUGE – With LSU Head Coach Paul Mainieri chasing down another milestone in his coaching career on Sunday by seeking his 1,400th career win as a skipper, the celebration appeared it may be saved for another evening when his Tigers entered the bottom of the ninth inning trailing Tennessee 7-3.

However, his evergelling squad earned Mainieri his milestone with an amazing 6-run ninth frame, including a walk-off 3-run bomb by freshman designated hitter Daniel Cabrera, to earn a series sweep over the visiting Volunteers.

Bulldogs, Lady Bulldogs end tennis regular season on high note

The Jennings High School Tennis Team wrapped up their regular season in impressive fashion by winning split-squad matches over Eunice High School and Welsh High School. The Jennings Bulldogs defeated the Bobcats 3-1 in their match, while also claiming a 2-0 win over the Greyhounds. The Lady Dogs followed suit by disposing of Eunice 5-1, and also dumping the Lady Hounds 2-0 as well. Both teams will turn their sites towards regional announcements that were paired on Monday.

Bethel drops slugfest 19-18 to Assembly Christian

NEW IBERIA - The Assembly Christian Lady Lions used a nine-run sixth inning to erase an early deficit and rally past Bethel for a 19-18 victory in an ACEL (Association of Christian Educators of Louisiana) shoutout that saw the two teams combine for 31 hits.

Bethel (5-4) erupted for six runs in the second inning and took a 12-8 advantage after five frames before the Lady Lions’ late charge.

The Lady Lions strung together eight of their 21 hits in the bottom of the sixth and took advantage of one walk and two errors to snag the lead (17-12) and the momentum.

Bill could open door many want locked

“In God We Trust” is the official motto of the United States, one that dates back to the founding fathers. For some it has spiritual meaning and for others it is used in a historical context to refer to early America.

This week, the state Senate voted 33-0 to require public schools to display the motto in their buildings, as well as teach students about its meaning. Baton Rouge Democrat Regina Barrow sponsored the bill, saying she felt it is important for young people to understand the nation’s patriotic history. The proposal is now in the House for consideration.
