Calif. to join Guard border mission, but with conditions

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — California Gov. Jerry Brown accepted President Donald Trump’s call to send the National Guard to the Mexican border, but rejected the White House’s portrait of a burgeoning border crisis and insisted that his troops will have nothing to do with immigration enforcement.

The Democratic governor broke a week of silence Wednesday by agreeing to contribute 400 troops, though not all will be on the border. Brown’s commitment brought the pledges from four states that border Mexico to just shy of the low end of the president’s target of 2,000 to 4,000 troops.

Jennings Netters sweep through Notre Dame

The Jennings Bulldogs and Lady Bulldogs Tennis squads picked up a pair of wins over Notre Dame on the courts Tuesday by downing the Pios and Lady Pios by a final of 3-2 in each match. Both squads were back in action on Thursday at home against Eunice to celebrate Senior Night Festivities.

In girls’ action, Maddie Futch claimed a 6-3 victory over Meaghan Thibodeaux, while Caroline VanHook alos topped Grace Bernard by a final of 8-4 in the only other singles match.

Lady Tigers end season on high note

IOWA – The Lake Arthur Lady Tigers capped off their best season in school history Tuesday by knocking off the Lady Yellow Jackets of Iowa 9-1 in a nondistrict contest to finish their season with an 11-12 overall record. The 11 wins is the most recorded in the history of the program, and the Lady Tigers will now await their playoff destination when pairings are announced. As of Tuesday, the Lady Tigers were sitting at No. 20 in the latest LHSAA Power Ratings in Class 2A and would have to hit the road in the first round.

Labas pitches LSU past No. 25 Louisiana Tech

BATON ROUGE — Freshman right-hander AJ Labas fired six innings of two-hit baseball to lead the 19th-ranked LSU Tigers past No. 25 Louisiana Tech, 2-0, Tuesday night at Alex Box Stadium, Skip Bertman Field.

With the win, LSU improves to 21-13 on the season while Louisiana Tech drops to 24-11.

The game lasted 1:54, marking LSU’s shortest nine-inning game since a 2-1 victory over Auburn lasted 1:49 on May 22, 2002, in the SEC Tournament.

Ex-Saint Gleason considered for Congressional Gold Medal

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Federal lawmakers from Louisiana and Washington have submitted legislation to award former New Orleans Saints and Washington State football player Steve Gleason with the Congressional Gold Medal, the highest civilian honor awarded by Congress.

U.S. Senator Bill Cassidy, a Republican from Louisiana and a doctor who helped sponsor the legislation, seeks to honor Gleason for his work as an advocate for people with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease.

Dirt pit rezoned with conditions

A complaint was filed recently by Jennings resident Shawn Stoleson to the Jeff Davis Parish Police Jury concerning a dirt pit owned by Mark Gary off La. 102, which did not have an appropriate zoning classification.

Wednesday, the Jeff Davis Police Jury approved a requested zoning classification change from A-1 to I-1 for the dirt pit, meaning a change from an agricultural to a light industrial zoning.

Fenton discusses retirement options for employees

FENTON – The board of aldermen agreed Tuesday to allow CenterPoint Energy to continue offering services to the town and discussed retirement benefits for the village’s police officers and employees.

The issue of offering retirement benefits to the village’s employees and police officers came up during the monitoring of the village’s financial activities by accounting firm J. Walker and Company as mandated by the Louisiana Legislative Auditor’s office due to errors in its 2015-2016 audit.

Super Summer Sign-Up rescheduled

The Library on the Lawn and Super Summer Sign-Up events scheduled to be held Saturday, April 14, have been rescheduled due to a forecast of rain this weekend.

The events, which are hosted by the Jeff Davis Parish Library and the Jennings Kiwanis Club, offer information for parents about what events their children can take part in during the summer as well refreshments and activities for children including a rabbit petting station, face-painting and a Lego table.

Welsh officials continue to address water issues

WELSH - Despite recent efforts here to address water discoloration, people are still reporting issues.

Mayor Carolyn Louviere and town workers have been attempting new approaches to the issue caused by the switch from an old groundwater storage tank to a new one, Louviere said.

“They transferred the water to the new tank from the old, which has been disassembled and will be removed and dealt with properly,” she said. “We’ve still been getting complaints from people who have had rusty discolored water, though.”
