LSU team earns awards at poultry competition

BATON ROUGE — The LSU poultry judging team took a number of awards at this year’s U.S. Poultry Foundation Ted Cameron National Poultry Judging Contest held April 4-6.

For 71 years, LSU has hosted the event, and this year’s team competed against 11 other schools from as far away as Iowa State University and Penn State.

The LSU team placed first overall in the Team Production Finals. They won first place in Team Breed Selection, second place in the Team Market Products Finals, and first place as the High Team Overall.

Seven JDP schools to receive donations

Seven Jeff Davis Parish schools will receive donations totaling over $5,000 from Community Coffee as part of its Community Cash for Schools program.

The schools were just some of the more than 800 schools that participate in the program and received donations this year, said Community Coffee General Manager of Communications Jodi Conachen.

Our Lady of Immaculate was the program’s highest earner in Jeff Davis Parish, with proceeds of $1,615 being donated to the school.

Lake Arthur Elementary came in second with proceeds from the program totaling $1,210.10.

Boutique fundraiser to benefit CADA

A pop-up boutique featuring LuLaRoe clothing sales that will benefit Jeff Davis Parish Communities Against Domestic Abuse (CADA) will open Thursday, April 26.

The event will take place from 4:30- 6:30 p.m. at Jennings United Methodist Church located at 702 North Cary Avenue.

The event, which is in its third year, will sell clothing from women’s fashion line LuLaRoe, known for its leggings and other outwear that come in bright colors and unique patterns.

HATHAWAY - What started as a hobby for a young resident here is beginning to garner recognition from the community.

Jordan Broussard, 15, is a sophomore at Hathaway High School who has been teaching himself how to draw since he was four years old.

“I would pause the television and draw the cartoons characters,” he said. “When I was about 10, I graduated to a sketch pad and I started drawing faces. When I was younger and first started, I could put the lines and shapes on paper and I didn’t have to use a grid to draw.”

LIFT, COA to team up for Celebrate Life event

Hixson LIFT from Calcasieu Parish will be teaming with Jeff Davis Parish Council on Aging (COA) for a Celebrate Life event at the Lake Arthur Park pavilion from 9 a.m. to noon Thursday, April 26.

Jody Barrilleaux, community relations director for LIFT, said she enjoys being part of such a wonderful group.

Funeral arrangements for Duane “Shug” Drake, 42, will be announced by Semien-Lewis Mortuary of Jennings. Mr. Drake entered into eternal rest Wednesday, April 11, 2018, in a New Orleans Hospital.

JPSO arrests two Welsh men in raids

Deputies with the Jeff Davis Parish Sheriff’s Office (JDSO) arrested two men after conducting raids at three homes in Welsh Thursday morning.

Reginald Patterson, 38, of Welsh was arrested and charged with distribution of Schedule II drugs, possession of marijuana and cocaine as well as an outstanding warrant.

Marques Hensley, 33, of Welsh was arrested and charged with possession of marijuana and paraphernalia as well as an outstanding warrant.

On stand, Bill Cosby’s chief accuser says she wants justice

NORRISTOWN, Pa. (AP) — Bill Cosby’s chief accuser took the witness stand Friday at his sexual assault retrial, telling a jury she wants justice after five other women testified that the man once revered as “America’s Dad” is a serial rapist who harmed them too.

Andrea Constand’s appearance was her second chance to confront Cosby in court after his first trial ended with a hung jury. This time, though, she will face a defense team intent on portraying her as a “con artist” who framed him for money.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Amid escalating global tensions over Syria, President Donald Trump weighed his options for responding -- possibly with military strikes -- to the Syrian government’s suspected chemical weapons attack against civilians.
