Elton mayor takes contest loss in stride

ELTON - The town here failed to score enough points to place in its division for this year’s Cleanest City Contest but the mayor said he remains proud of residents’ dedication to the competition.

Mayor Tony Laughlin said he has yet to receive an official scorecard with specific critiques but believes Elton was lacking in certain technical items on the Cleanest City critical criteria. He said he thinks these items did not speak to the cleanliness of Elton yet still mattered in the final scoring.

Ryan bows out: ‘I have given ‘ this job everything I have’

WASHINGTON (AP) — Claiming he’s accomplished a “heckuva lot,” House Speaker Paul Ryan announced Wednesday he will not run for re-election and will retire next year, injecting another layer of uncertainty as Republicans face worries over losing their majority in the fall.

Zuckerberg: Regulation of social media firms ‘inevitable’

WASHINGTON (AP) — Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg told a House oversight panel Wednesday that he believes it is “inevitable” there will be regulation of the social media industry and also disclosed to lawmakers that his own data was included in the personal information sold to malicious third parties.

Dogs drop district showdown to St. Louis

JENNINGS - Struggles on the mound proved costly for the Jennings Bulldogs Tuesday in their District 4-3A showdown with the St. Louis Saints.

The Bulldogs (12-8, 3-4) issued 10 free passes and surrendered 11 runs in the first three innings, enabling the Saints to cruise to a 16-4 victory in a contest that was halted after the sixth inning due to the mercy.

The Saints remain the lone unbeaten team in league play with the victory and they improved to 18-11 overall.

Errors prove costly for Lady Eagles in loss to Assembly Christian

JENNINGS – One bad inning was all it took Tuesday for the Bethel Christian Lady Eagles.

Assembly Christian exploded for nine runs in the third inning of a tight game and the Lady Eagles were never able to recover in a 19-9 setback at Bethel’s home park.

The Lady Lions led just 3-1 before the outburst in an inning that saw 13 batters approach the plate.

The visitors took advantage of a pair of errors and banged out eight hits in the frame, including a threerun inside the park home run to left by Amber Mora.

The miscues were what proved costly, however.

Griffin III hopes to start anew as a backup QB with Ravens

OWINGS MILLS, Md. (AP) — After winning a Heisman Trophy, being picked second overall in the 2012 NFL draft and becoming an instant sensation with the Washington Redskins, Robert Griffin III is looking ahead to a promising future instead of wistfully gazing at his brilliant past.

Griffin agreed to terms on a one-year contract with the Baltimore Ravens last week, fully aware his role will be to back up Joe Flacco. He’s fine with that, because RG3 is far more interested in where his career is going rather than where it’s been.

Jr. Catholic Daughters spread Easter cheer

The Junior Catholic Daughters (JCD) St. Maria Goretti #1573 of Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church had a busy Easter season. Their season included Easter activities starting with the March monthly activity, on March 11 and ended with the Easter Monday activity on April 2.

Normally, to visit with a doctor, you need to schedule an appointment and meet with him or her at their office, but for some Lake Arthur Elementary School (LAES) students, a visit with a doctor happened at school, and they weren’t even sick!

Lake Arthur native, Rachel David, may have moved away but she still enjoys giving back to her hometown, and this time it was in the form of a educational lesson in the pre-k and kindergarten classrooms at LAES.
