One year and $2,500 later

I’M JUST SAYIN’

Ihave not had a cigarette in one year, 24 days, 16 hours and 51 minutes. I saved $2,486.30 by doing so.

I do not see this as a triumph though. I only claim victory day by day. To paraphrase a quote from a movie, “You’ve worked hard and you’re a champion. The trick is to stay a champion.”

Name taken off mortage in refinancing

DEAR BRUCE: To make a long story short, I had to quit my job to raise my newborn son. My husband refinanced our home, and unknown to me for years, my name was taken off the mortgage, but my name is on the deed. I cannot afford and don’t want to refinance again. Is there any way to get my name back on the mortgage? My husband is seven years older than I am, and I don’t want a mess when he passes away. — C.S.

Library system names new director

The Jeff Davis Parish Library system has announced it will hire current Calcasieu Parish Public Library Central branch manager Clare McNally Coleman to replace outgoing library director Dr. Linda Lebert Corbello.

Corbello said she is confident that the right person has been chosen for the job.

“I feel very confident that from a collection of qualified applicants we were able to obtain a person with expertise in the library world, both as an employee and as a manager of a major branch such as Calcasieu Parish Library,” Corbello said.

Officials: There is proper way to traverse four-way stops

Most drivers are well-versed in the rules of the road and are able to make their way on their daily travels safely. Though most people know how to operate a vehicle when coming to a red light or a yield sign; there is one traffic situation that confuses many – four-way stops.

Located at the intersections of two streets and posted with stop signs, fourway stops can often be confusing to traverse as there are no posted rules of whom has the right-of-way which can lead to accidents.

McCluer earns $16,000 in scholarships

A Hathaway High School senior will receive a $16,000 college scholarship from the Phillips 66 Dependent Scholarship Program. The competitive program awards outstanding college-bound students whose parents work for Phillips 66 or one of its subsidiaries. The awards are based on academic excellence, community service and financial need.

The company announced Jacob McCluer of Jennings as an honoree this year. Jacob, Son of Phillips 66 employee Robert McCluer, is a senior at Hathaway High School.

Duhon earns Doctor of Optometry degree

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Jillian Duhon, OD, of Jennings was among 133 students recently awarded the Doctor of Optometry degree from Southern College of Optometry in Memphis.

Duhon graduated Magna Cum Laude and Beta Sigma Kappa, a designation for students demonstrating exceptional academic achievement. She also earned the Dr. James Sandefur Endowed Award to honor her commitment to pursuing private practice optometry.
