Inaugural Buddy Ball season ends with high hopes on horizon

Buddy Ball, the premiere special needs sports league of Jeff Davis Parish may be over for the summer, but the fun and fellowship will continue for the players.

Players took part in the last of a four-game season of Buddy Ball at Zigler Park Thursday evening and received trophies afterwards. The next season is slated to start sometime next summer but there are plans to continue to reach out to these players until then.

White House: Russia call for Ukraine referendum illegitimate

WASHINGTON (AP) — The White House said Friday it “is not considering supporting” a Vladimir-Putin-backed call for a referendum in eastern Ukraine in the aftermath of President Donald Trump’s meeting with the Russian president.

Russia’s ambassador to the U.S., Anatoly Antonov, revealed Friday that the two leaders had discussed the possibility of a referendum in separatist-leaning eastern Ukraine during their Helsinki summit.

HATHAWAY – With the departure of former basketball coach Carlo Maggio to Elton High School, Hathaway High School (HHS) went into the college ranks to bag their next head man. Former McNeese State University Assistant Coach Eric Willis will take over the reigns of the Hornet program after Maggio guided Hathaway to a state runner-up finish in 2017 and a quarterfinal appearance in 2018. Willis spent 7 seasons with former Cowboys’ Head Coach Dave Simmons, but explained he was ready to jump into the high school ranks this year and interviewed for a couple of jobs around the area.

Merkel: German gov’t is solid despite migration fight

BERLIN (AP) — Chancellor Angela Merkel acknowledged Friday that a bitter fight over migrant policy hurt Germans’ confidence in her government, but said she never thought of quitting and insisted that her administration is doing solid work.

Merkel’s fourth-term government took office in March after a sixmonth effort to put together a new governing coalition. So far, it has been remarkable chiefly for the spat within Merkel’s own two-party conservative bloc that threatened to bring down the administration earlier this month.
