JDN details campaign coverage rules

Friday marked the final day of qualifying for the November 6 primary and candidates across the parish and state are beginning to campaign.

Jennings Daily News (JDN) would like all candidates and the public to be familiar with the newspaper’s campaign coverage guidelines that will be observed for this election.

CLEMSON, S.C. — The PwC SMU Athletic Forum announced today that Clemson running back Travis Etienne has been named to the watch list for the Doak Walker Award, which annually honors the nation’s top college running back. Etienne is one of 62 running backs named to this year’s watch list.

Inaugural Buddy Ball season ends with high hopes on horizon

Buddy Ball, the premiere special needs sports league of Jeff Davis Parish may be over for the summer, but the fun and fellowship will continue for the players.

Players took part in the last of a four-game season of Buddy Ball at Zigler Park Thursday evening and received trophies afterwards. The next season is slated to start sometime next summer but there are plans to continue to reach out to these players until then.

WPD arrests wanted sex offender

A sex offender wanted in several states was arrested in Welsh on Wednesday.

Jerry Bolish, 51, was arrested and is being held in the Welsh jail awaiting extradition.

Around 3 p.m. Wednesday detectives with the Welsh Police Department received several complaints about a suspicious man. During their investigation police located the man near Sportsman Park, Police Chief Marcus Crochet said.

Ohio killer spared after extent of childhood abuse revealed

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Ohio Gov. John Kasich on Friday spared a condemned killer whose sentence was challenged after a juror came forward and said information about the extent of the inmate’s tough childhood wasn’t properly presented at trial.

The Republican governor commuted the sentence of death row inmate Raymond Tibbetts to life without the possibility of parole, citing “fundamental flaws” in the sentencing portion of Tibbetts’ trial.

Musical instrument drive inspired by student’s story

MONROE (AP) — Isaiah Jones didn’t know that talking about his struggle to find a musical instrument could inspire people to help other students.

Jones, 18, was active at Strauss Theatre when his director asked him to do an interview with the Arts Council of Northeast Louisiana. He told Community Development Coordinator Danielle Kelley Tolbird about being in the band at Carroll High School and how he wished there was more funding for the arts.

Funeral services for Mrs. Pricilla Pearl “Patsy” Parsley Black, 78, of Lafayette were held on Saturday, July 21, 2018, at 10 a.m. in Evangeline at St. Joseph Catholic Church, with Rev. Paul LaFleur officiating.

Visitation for Mrs. Black were held on Friday, July 20, 2018 from 3:30-9 p.m. in Miguez Funeral Home Chapel. A rosary was recited at 6 p.m. Friday evening. Visitation resumed Saturday morning from 8 a.m. until time of service at St. Joseph Catholic Church.

Burial followed in St. Joseph Cemetery under the direction of Miguez Funeral Home.

Dolores Ann Lawrence

Dolores Ann Lawrence, 83, of Welsh went to her Eternal Home on Thursday, July 19, 2018. She was born Oct. 1, 1934 in Lake Arthur.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, July 23, 2018, at First United Methodist Church in Welsh, with Rev. Angela Bulhof officiating.

Visitation will be held from 4-8 p.m. Sunday at Hixson Funeral Home in Welsh and will resume at 9 a.m. Monday in the church.

Burial will follow in Oaklawn Cemetery in Welsh.

Death toll from Missouri duck boat accident climbs to 17

BRANSON, Mo. (AP) — Divers found four more bodies Friday in a Missouri lake where a duck boat packed with tourists capsized and sank in high winds, bringing the death toll to 17 in the country-and-western town of Branson, authorities said.

Investigators blamed stormy weather for the accident Thursday evening on Table Rock Lake. Winds at the time were blowing as hard as 65 mph (105 kph), according to the National Weather Service.

Stocks waver, dollar slips as traders shrug off trade talk

NEW YORK (AP) — U.S. stocks are little changed Friday as traders shrug off the latest trade threats from President Donald Trump and focus on company earnings reports, which contained some betterthan-expected results from big names including Microsoft. Banks are rising along with interest rates and high-dividend companies are slipping.
