The 2018 fall series of Turn It Up Tuesdays concerts kicks off this week in downtown Jennings, with Jamie Bergeron on the stage from 6-8 p.m. The concerts are held in Founder’s Park and are free to attend. People are invited to bring their lawn chairs and are able to bring their own food and drinks. There will be concessions that can be purchased there as well.

KCs honor August Knight, Family of Month

During the September meeting of Knights of Columbus Council 2012 from Our Lady Help of Christians (OLHC) Parish in Jennings, Horace Naquin (left, pictured with wife Frances) was named the Council’s Knight of the Month for August 2018. Naquin most recently coordinated and oversaw the renovation work done to the exterior of the OLHC Church building and spearheaded the project to raise funds used to erect the bell tower by the church. He was personally involved in the mechanics of building the support structure for the bell.

Something that has been told to me by several people is that they are apprehensive to write a letter to the editor or publicly take a stand on certain issues. They worry they could face some sort of retaliation. They are not scared of becoming victims of violence, but having their livelihoods damaged.

Knowing fertilizers and soil testing is important

A common misconception is that the type of fertilizer you choose to use is based strictly on the type of plant you are growing. In other words, each type of plant has its own specially formulated fertilizer, and that’s what should be used. However, this is not the case.

State working to address maternal mortality

The Louisiana Department of Health released a new report this month on maternal mortality in Louisiana. Maternal mortality is a pregnancyrelated death occurring up to 42 days following the end of a pregnancy. The report includes recommendations made by an expert maternal mortality review committee to guide improvements in maternal health in Louisiana.

Gurriel homers twice as Astros punch playoff ticket

HOUSTON (AP) — The Houston Astros toasted a playoff berth in a private moment, and then moved on to their next goal.

“You’ve got to take it step by step so it’s nice to acknowledge and celebrate it because you don’t take it for granted,” right-hander Gerrit Cole said. “But we’ve got some more work to do.”

Yuli Gurriel hit a grand slam and a two-run homer on his way to a career-high seven RBIs, and the Astros secured a spot in the postseason with an 11-3 victory over the Los Angeles Angels on Friday night.

Alcocks celebrate 60th anniversary

Gene and Nanette Alcock of Jennings celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary Saturday, Sept. 8, 2018.

The couple was united in marriage Sept. 8, 1958, at Our Lady Help of Christians Church in Jennings.

The couple was honored at a gathering hosted by their sons and daughters-in-law, Dwayne and Carla Alcock of Jennings and Darren and Emily Alcock of Lake Charles. Son Doug and daughterin-law Denise reside in Alexandria.

The couple has 11 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

The scariest Halloween ever

Halloween is six weeks away, and I am very scared. Not of trickor-treaters coming to my door, or of my car being soaped (even though it needs it).

No, I’m scared that I’ll have to go shopping for something between now and Oct. 31. Because I know that there is no way I can go to any store between now and then without passing pyramids of gaudy “holiday-sized” packs of Halloween candy, costumes, napkins, tablecloths and giant outdoor decorations. What happened to all the costumes and decorations people bought last year? Where did they go?
