Facebook says 50M user accounts affected by security breach

NEW YORK (AP) — Facebook says it recently discovered a security breach affecting nearly 50 million user accounts.

The hack is the latest setback for Facebook during a year of tumult for the global social media service.

In a blog post , the company says hackers exploited its “View As” feature, which lets people see what their profiles look like to someone else. Facebook says it has taken steps to fix the security problem and alerted law enforcement.

Standing Rock Sioux pledges support for pipeline protests

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — An American Indian tribe that has led opposition to the Dakota Access oil pipeline for more than two years has formally pledged its support for protests against three other pipeline projects.

Officials: Voter registration deadline set for Oct. 9

The last day to register to vote in the Nov. 6 election is approaching and residents in Jeff Davis Parish are encouraged to get signed up before the deadline.

“We want to encourage residents to get out and exercise their right vote,” Registrar of Voters (ROV) Joann Blair said. “There are many options to get signed up to vote.”

Lion’s Club to host Kindness Rocks Run

Bullying, peer pressure and acceptance are issues that youth are subjected to on a daily basis. One event is being held to promote kindness among area teens and youth.

The First Annual “Kindness Rocks” Anti-Bullying Fun Run will be held on Saturday, Oct. 13, from 7:30-11:30 a.m. with an opening ceremony starting at 8 a.m. at the Louisiana Oil and Gas Park, located at 100 Rue de l’Acadie in Jennings. The event is being hosted by the Jennings Lion’s Club with assistance from the Jeff Davis Parish Sheriff’s Office (JDSO).

Whistleblowers allege corruption, patient neglect

A home-based veterans clinic is currently under investigation after allegations of widespread corruption, patient neglect and a host of other violations were reported by two whistleblowers who say they were subjected to stalking and retaliation for speaking up.

Water regulations suspended in Louisiana

BATON ROUGE — Louisiana has joined a group of states where a 2015 rule regulating which waterways are subject to federal jurisdiction won’t be enforced for the time being.

The rule is suspended in 28 states pending a redefinition of “Waters of the United States,” often abbreviated as WOTUS.

Louisiana is covered by an injunction that was granted by a district court in Texas earlier this month. The state will continue under rules set by the 1972 Clean Water Act until the new WOTUS definition can be written.
