Nineteen people were booked into the parish jail by the Jeff Davis Parish Sheriff’s Office over the past week.

Friday, September 21

Craig Joseph Rodrigue, 38, of Iowa, was charged with obstruction of justice, theft and criminal trespassing.

Dontravia James Hamilton, 19, of Lafayette, was charged with illegal possession of stolen firearms.

Romero announces birth of daughter

Paula Romero of Mermentau announces the birth of her daughter, Everly Jane Romero.

Everly was born August 27, 2018.

Everly weighed 6 pounds, 13 ounces at birth and was 18 inches long.

Siblings that welcomed her home include Nellia Rose, Keaton Rose, Kane Rose and Maylee Romero.

Maternal grandparents are Tammy and Ronald Romero of Mermentau.

Great-grandparents are Ernest and Alberta Romero and Jane and Malcome Richard, all of Mermentau.

Brittany Benoit of Lake Arthur was named Godmother.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — An American Indian tribe that has led opposition to the Dakota Access oil pipeline for more than two years has formally pledged its support for protests against three other pipeline projects.

Tsunami sweeps away homes on Indonesian island of Sulawesi

JAKARTA, Indonesia (AP) — A powerful earthquake rocked the Indonesian island of Sulawesi on Friday, triggering a 3-meter-tall (10-foot-tall) tsunami that an official said swept away houses in at least two cities.

Disaster agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said the tsunami hit Palu, the capital of central Sulawesi province, as well as the smaller city of Donggala and several other coastal settlements.

Everybody on plane survives crash landing in Pacific lagoon

WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) — A passenger on a plane that crashed into a Pacific lagoon on Friday said the flight attendants were panicking and he saw water pouring through a hole in the side of the plane before he was able to escape.

Local boats helped rescue all 47 passengers and crew after the plane hit the water while trying to land at the Chuuk Island airport in the Micronesia archipelago.

Seven people were taken to a hospital, according to officials, including one described as being in critical but stable condition.

Books bring history to life

Every once in a while I come across a book that just makes me stop running so fast in my life and slow down to enjoy!

This recently happened to me when our library ordered a book entitled History As They Saw It: Iconic Moments From the Past In Color. The authors are Wolfgang Wild and Jordan Lloyd.

Fourteen girls representing seven Jefferson Davis Parish high schools will be vying for the title of 2018 Jefferson Davis Parish Fair Queen. The annual pageant is scheduled to be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, October 4, at the Jefferson Davis Parish Fairgrounds.
