At least 7 die as bus, semi-trailer collide head-on

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) — A blown tire on a semitrailer may be to blame for a deadly head-on crash with a commercial passenger bus along Interstate 40 in New Mexico near the Arizona border, according to authorities.

At least seven people were killed, and many of the 49 passengers aboard the Greyhound bus were injured, although authorities couldn’t immediately provide an exact count of how many were hurt or their conditions.

Man charged with making death threats over Trump editorials

LOS ANGELES (AP) — A Los Angeles man upset about The Boston Globe’s coordinated editorial response to President Donald Trump’s attacks on the news media was arrested Thursday on charges he threatened to kill the newspaper’s journalists, who he called an “enemy of the people,” federal prosecutors said.

Robert Chain’s phone calls to the Boston newsroom started immediately after the Globe appealed to newspapers across the country to condemn what it called a “dirty war against the free press,” prosecutors said. He is accused of making 14 calls between Aug. 10 and Aug. 22.

What research says about marijuana and cancer

Attitudes about marijuana are changing. Such changes are reflected in legislation that has legalized marijuana in many areas and, in some instances, unofficially decriminalized possession of small amounts of marijuana in other places.

Shifting attitudes about marijuana, also known as cannabis, may be attributed to various factors, including medical research. Though research studying the effects of marijuana on recovering cancer patients is ongoing, cancer patients and their families may be curious about the potential for cannabis to assist in their recoveries.

City to continue trash bin talks

Proposed 24-hour rule back on agenda for Sept. 4 council meeting

The proposed 24-hour rule for city residents’ waste containers will be further discussed this month.

Jennings City Council members decided to table the proposed ordinance in August that would amend the city’s garbage, trash and refuse rules to include a new policy that would require residents to remove waste containers from the curb within 24 hours of trash pickup.

Lake Arthur resident George O’brien took the time to give the gift of life Friday at Lifeshare’s Mobile Blood bank at Market Basket. Lifeshare Donor Specialist III Shonna Goodwill said that every drop of blood stays in Jeff Davis Parish and that donors are notified when their blood is utilized so that they see the real-life lifesaving effects of blood donation.

 

Over 100 years of influence

LAKE ARTHUR - Over a century ago, a small group of women with big ideas decided they wanted a library for their town. Little did they know that what began as a small act would end up having a lasting impact for generations to come.

The Woman’s Library Club of Lake Arthur has been a major contributor to the community the last 116 years.

“When an organization like this has been around for over 100 years, it shows that when someone sets their mind to creating something, their vision can impact the community for generations to come,” said club President Debbie Abshire-Sonnier.

CHURCH POINT - A furious Jennings Bulldog rally fell just short here Friday night, as the homesteading Church Point Bears claimed a 30-21 win over the Dogs at Battlin’ Bear Stadium. The Bears (1-0) built a 23-7 lead, and fought off a pair of second half Bulldog scores in the second half to avenge a 2017 playoff win by the Bulldogs.
