Iota fights through tough Basile for 28-10 victory

IOTA – It wasn’t the best of games for the Iota Bulldogs Thursday in their season opener against Class 1A Basile.

It was, however, good enough.

After playing a scoreless first quarter that was marred with penalties and missed assignments, the Bulldogs posted two touchdowns in the second frame and added a pair in the second half to survive a scare from the Bearcats and walk away with a 28-10 victory.

This past Friday, the Lake Arthur (LA) Tigers and Elton Indians faced off in the long dormant Jeff Davis Parish rivalry, the Battle for Highway 26. What was supposed to be resumed last year had to wait until this year, as last year’s Week 1 matchup was cancelled due to Hurricane Harvey. Prune roses in late summer

In late summer it’s time to think about pruning our roses. Roses respond best when they receive two major prunings each year.

We prune our repeatflowering roses, also called everblooming roses or remontant roses, based on the timing of the two major flowering periods that occur each year. The first major flowering season occurs in late spring to early summer, and the second occurs in fall. Roses do bloom in mid- to late summer, but the number and quality of the flowers are reduced.

USDA officials visit LSU AgCenter

BATON ROUGE — Several U.S. Department of Agriculture officials toured an LSU AgCenter research station and met with Louisiana agriculture leaders, researchers and farmers on Aug. 23

The group heard about ways the AgCenter and the Louisiana Department of Agriculture and Forestry work together to help farmers keep invasive pests at bay and avoid spreading them. They also visited the Louis Dreyfus Company grain elevator at the Port of Greater Baton Rouge, where Louisiana commodities such as soybeans are loaded onto ships for international sales.

More awareness needed regarding mental health, suicide

Suicidal thoughts, much like mental health conditions, can affect anyone regardless of age, gender or background. In fact, according to the National Alliance on Mental Illness, suicide is often the result of an untreated mental health condition. Suicidal thoughts, although common, should not be considered normal and often indicate more serious issues.

Supposed accounts of attempted crime make regular appearances on social media. Usually, these stories imply that unidentified nefarious characters seemed intent on physically harming or kidnapping the narrator in a public place.

The who, what and where follow the same format. Who? Usually a woman, specifically a mother with children in tow. What? Suspicions of impending human trafficking or death. Where? No such thing as a bad day

I just spent two hours in a dentist’s chair having a crown replaced. It wasn’t all the fun it’s cracked up to be.

It seems all the fillings and bridge work done to my teeth only have a shelf life of 30 to 40 years, and now all of it is starting to come loose or deteriorate in some unlovely way and must be replaced. Every time I walk into Dr. Smile’s office, the bill is $1,200 — and that’s if he doesn’t have to send me to a specialist, where the fee is easily double that.
