Campus construction, renovations eyed

Proposals concern Jennings, Welsh and Elton schools

(Editor’s note: The following article focuses on proposals expected to be included on March 2019 ballots. These items are not on ballots currently being cast in early voting ahead of the Nov. 6 election.)

Voters in three different school districts will decide next year whether to back proposals for new or renovated campuses in the parish.

The March 30, 2019, vote will involve School District 2 in Jennings, Consolidated School District 1 in Welsh and School District 22 in Elton.

Melissa Doise 5K winners announced

The Melissa Doise Breast Cancer Foundation held its ninth annual 5K run/walk Saturday, Oct. 27.To date, the foundation has helped 153 breast cancer patients by raising $136,119. Top Male Finisher was Ian Augustine. Top Female Finisher was M. Suire. Male age group winners were L. Sonnier (1-10), Ethan Fontenot (11-20), Chase Fruge (21-30), Scotty Fontenot (31-40), Reggie Fontenot (41-50) and Donald Waguespack (61 and over). Female age group winners were K.

Elton FFA sets record

ELTON - The Future Farmers of America (FFA) Chapter here set a state record over the weekend at the 91st National Competition Convention and Expo in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Thirty-nine teams from around the state competed in three rounds of competition over three days, according to the National FFA. The Elton chapter won first place in the Chapter of Conduct Meeting category. This was the first time a Louisiana team took the national award in that category, and only the third time to win a national title.

It’s hard to believe that week 10 of the high school football season is already upon us. For some teams it has been a good season and for some it probably carries disappointments of what might have been.

The Jennings Bulldogs have endured a tortuous season with plenty of ups and downs. Bulldog head coach Rusty Phelps bemoaned the number of injuries he has experienced this year and also the seriousness of the injuries.

Red Sox fans roar for another title in Boston

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Way up in the reserve seating level at Dodger Stadium, thousands of Boston Red Sox fans screamed, hugged and danced with just as much fervor as the World Serieswinning players on the field below.

Amid the gleeful chaos, a father in a Red Sox T-shirt and a Bruins cap held aloft his screaming 5-week-old daughter in the chilly Sunday night air, baptizing her in the sights and sounds of another Boston sports championship.

Parish libraries join storm relief efforts

A local church has been collecting items needed to help those affected by Hurricane Michael in Florida. Jeff Davis Parish libraries are now joining to help broaden the donation collection area.

Hurricane Michael made landfall along the Florida Panhandle Oct. 10. Affected residents are still without power in some areas. The storm left a trail of devastation in its wake, leaving people without homes, food, fuel or fresh water sources.

Iota remains perfect

IOTA - The Iota Bulldogs limited Pine Prairie to just 156 total yards while their offense reeled off five touchdowns in a 38-0 beatdown of the Panthers Friday evening.

The victory sent the Bulldogs to 9-0 on the season and set up a showdown with Eunice (8-1) this Friday for the District 5-3A championship.

The win was especially sweet Iota’s upperclassmen, who were honored on Senior night. That group went 0-10 in 2015 and has improved each year since under head coach Josh Andrus.

Sex offender awareness stressed during Halloween

In light of the Halloween season, the Jeff Davis Parish Sheriff’s Office (JDSO) is reminding parents to exercise caution during trickor-treating and other public activities geared toward children.

Parents should not only be aware of street and traffic dangers during nighttime activities, but also regarding area sex offenders, as well as their exposure to the public during this youth-based holiday, according to a press release from JDSO.
