Funeral services for Mrs. Velda Theunissen, 82, formerly of Jennings, will be held today, Tuesday, Oct. 30, 2018, at Our Lady Help of Christians Catholic Church at 10 a.m., with Rev. Charles McMillin officiating.

Visitation was held from 2-8 p.m. Monday and will continue from 8 a.m. today, Tuesday, until time of service. A Rosary was recited at 6 p.m. Monday in the funeral home chapel.

Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery under the direction of Miguez Funeral Home.

Campus construction, renovations eyed

Proposals concern Jennings, Welsh and Elton schools

(Editor’s note: The following article focuses on proposals expected to be included on March 2019 ballots. These items are not on ballots currently being cast in early voting ahead of the Nov. 6 election.)

Voters in three different school districts will decide next year whether to back proposals for new or renovated campuses in the parish.

The March 30, 2019, vote will involve School District 2 in Jennings, Consolidated School District 1 in Welsh and School District 22 in Elton.

Synagogue suspect at courthouse; survivors recall ordeal

PITTSBURGH (AP) — The man accused in the Pittsburgh synagogue massacre was released from a hospital and turned over to federal authorities for a court appearance Monday on charges he killed 11 people in what is believed to be the deadliest attack on Jews in U.S. history.

Robert Gregory Bowers, who was shot and wounded in a gun battle with police, arrived at the federal courthouse in downtown Pittsburgh less than two hours after his release from Allegheny General Hospital, according to U.S. marshals. A government car with a wheelchair inside was seen arriving earlier.

Largely unchecked public school fees affect access

BATON ROUGE (AP) — Largely unchecked public school fees in Louisiana are affecting low-income students’ access to classes and services.

The Advocate of Baton Rouge reported Sunday that school officials and boards currently have near unregulated authority when it comes to imposing student fees.

The latest state tally says roughly a dozen school districts and schools imposed student fees totaling nearly $3 million in the fiscal year the ended in June 2016.
