Official: Gunman’s resignation email had no sign of shooting

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (AP) — The resignation email the gunman sent hours before the shooting at a municipal building was brief, unremarkable and didn’t contain anything that foreshadowed the bloody rampage to come, a city official told The Associated Press on Monday.

“The document itself is part of the investigative file,” city Communications Director Julie Hill said in an email. “If detectives are able to clear it for release, we will provide it.”

China manufacturing data suggests damage from trade war

BEIJING (AP) — A report Monday on Chinese manufacturing suggested that Beijing’s trade war with the Trump administration is causing economic damage.

Surveys of manufacturers across the region for May showed that business confidence has been shaken by the conflict over President Donald Trump’s demands that Beijing change its industrial planning strategy and find other ways to redress its perennially huge trade surpluses.

La. budget deal near as school plan clears key hurdle

BATON ROUGE (AP) — A Louisiana budget deal seemed within reach after a $3.8 billion public school formula won passage from a key committee packed with House Republicans who previously opposed the spending plan.

The K-12 financing formula would give pay raises to teachers and school support workers, while also increasing discretionary spending to school districts.

House Republicans previously blocked the $39 million increase in districts’ flexible block grant money. But the Senate, Gov. John Bel Edwards and the state education board back the spending boost.

BATON ROUGE – The LSU Tigers finished off an undefeated Baton Rouge Regional Sunday night by earning a 6-4 victory over the Southern Miss Golden Eagles at a packed Alex Box Stadium to earn their 14th trip to the NCAA Super Regional Round. The Tigers (40-24) will now welcome in Florida State University for a best-of-three series this weekend for the chance to return to the College World Series in Omaha, Nebraska. The Seminoles upset No. 3 national seed Georgia in Athens this weekend, which allows the Tigers to host the Super Regional match-up.

The media regularly fails to do its job. I myself fail.

When I pore over the decades-old archives of this newspaper, I see how badly some of my predecessors failed.

I know some of the shameful headlines and stories from the past are a reflection of society at that time. What none of us would dare write today is in bold letters on the front page of an edition from 1946.

I thought, however, that better consideration would be given to those killed in combat.

Adulting 101

I saw a news report that some educational venue is offering a course in “adulting” to 20-somethings, because it seems that there are a bunch of 29-yearolds out there who don’t know how to run a dishwasher or make a cup of coffee.

Someone thinks that if they can learn how to do those things, then they are “adulting.” It would be pretty hard to set the bar any lower for being a grownup. It’s right out of “The Wizard of Oz” — the scarecrow doesn’t need a brain, all he needs is a diploma.

LDWF warns public of displaced wildlife during spillway opening

With the Morganza Spillway to be opened Sunday (June 2), wildlife species will seek higher ground and be displaced into habitat with which they may not be familiar. The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) urges the public to be especially cognizant of wildlife forced into populated areas by flood water from the spillway.
