DOTD reports lane closures at Lacassine

LACASSINE - The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD) announced outside lane closures on I-10 in the Lacassine area from June 3-6.

I-10 westbound at the U.S. 165 overpass will be reduced to one lane starting this week and ending at 7 a.m. on Thursday, June

6. The area affected will be from milepost 45.5 to milepost 45 in the Lacassine area.

The lane closure is necessary to make bridge deck repairs. Vehicles over 11-feet-wide may not travel through the work zone.

Welsh First Baptist Church showed their appreciation for local law enforcement by treating area officers to a luncheon at the church on Thursday.

“We started this about four years ago as our way to let the officers know we support them and thank them for what they do,” said organizer Michael Nichol. “We began by gathering and praying with the officers but then we came up with this idea to invite them for a meal once a year. It’s the least we can do for them.”

Residents from the Southwest Louisiana Veterans Home Reflections Unit enjoyed burgers and shakes at the Cutting Park. The men entertained themselves playing horseshoes. Although the weather was a bit warm, they all agreed that it was nice to be out and about.

COA to offer educational seminars

During the month of June, the Council on Aging (COA) will offer opportunities to learn more about different health-related topics.

Beginning at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, June 18, a preventative healthcare presentation presented by Health Screeners will inform seniors on the benefits of genetic testing for hereditary cancer and adverse drug reactions.

“The class is for informational purposes only,” said Activities Director Kim Benoit. “We want to make the public aware that this testing is available and the benefits of such screenings.”

Most experts in the field agree that children learn from the example of others close to them. However, some children are just innately kind.

An example of this type of child is Landon LaBouve, soon to be a third grader at Welsh Elementary. He is eight years old now but his world of compassion and generosity began when he was just a baby, his mother Brandy Hammons LaBouve said.

Young Landon has learned the principle of compassion early on. When asked why he does such kind things for others, he expressed that it was his faith in God.

Funeral services for Mrs. Bernice Kibodeaux, 91, will be held at 2 p.m. today, Tuesday, June 4, 2019, in Miguez Funeral Home, with Deacon Mike Tramel officiating.

Funeral home visitation will be held from 9:30 a.m. until service time. A rosary will be recited at 1:30 p.m. today, Tuesday, in the funeral home chapel.

Burial will be in Mermentau Memorial Cemetery.

Mrs. Kibodeaux died at 10:05 p.m. Saturday, June 1, 2019, in her residence.

A Mass of Christian burial for Shelby Ann Maris, 80, of Mermentau will be held at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Mermentau today, Tuesday, June 4, 2019, at 10 a.m., with Father Randall Moreau officiating.

Visitation was held at Matthews and Son Funeral Home in Jennings on Monday, June 3, 2019, from 3 p.m. until the time of her funeral mass, with a rosary recited at 6 p.m. Monday.

Shelby will be laid to rest in St. John the Evangelist Cemetery.

Military IDs to be allowed for voting

BATON ROUGE (AP) — Louisiana voters soon will be able to use federal military identification cards when they go to the polls.

Under current law, voters can present a Louisiana driver’s license or certain other ID cards when they show up to cast their ballots. Lawmakers agreed to expand that list to include a military ID card that contains a person’s name and picture. The legislation sailed through the House and Senate with unanimous votes.

US, Mexico officials to begin talks over tariffs, border

WASHINGTON (AP) — Mexico launched a counteroffensive Monday against the threat of U.S. tariffs, warning not only that it hurt the economies of both countries but also would allow a quarter million more Central Americans to migrate North.

A high-level delegation from the Mexican government held a press conference at the embassy in Washington, making the case against the threat by President Donald Trump of imposing a 5% tariff by June 10.
