DOTD lists area lane closures

The eastbound and westbound inside lanes of I-10 from the Acadia Parish line near Jennings will see lane closures this week.

The alternating lane closures will take place Thursday, July 18, at 8 p.m. until Friday, July 19, at 4 a.m. with weather permitting and will occur near exit 97 (La. 93 - Cankton, Scott).

The closure is necessary to allow crews to perform an herbicide spraying operation, according to Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD) Public Information Officer Tammy York.

Welsh High School hosted its first annual Agriculture Fun Camp on Monday, July 15, with 21 participants from grades 1-3. This one-day camp was organized by the Welsh High FFA chapter and their agriculture teacher, Misty Thibodeaux. Campers created and took home many hands-on projects including a wooden gumball machine, a potted plant and a custom picture frame. Students also enjoyed the fruits of their labor, making and eating ice cream and butter.The purpose of the camp was to host an interactive, educational fun day with a sprinkle of agriculture.

Drivers are the issue, not traffic lights and signs

Traffic lights and stop signs keep no one safe if drivers fail to pay attention or flout driving laws. This is the root of the problem at the intersection of U.S. 190 and La. 26 in Elton.

Town officials last week discussed contacting the state to see how the intersection can be made safer. Elton Police Chief Bruce Lemelle said that area has been the site of several fatalities in the past 10 years. Officials believe a four-way stop could address some safety issues in place of traffic lights.
