Flooding and drainage a complicated topic

Drainage is no easy issue to address. While many believe drainage in parts of Jeff Davis Parish are simply ignored, the reality is that much of south Louisiana has the deck stacked against it when properly diverting water.

It’s true that many local drainage systems are aging but no drainage system can withstand continuous downpours or flash flooding. As more businesses and homes are constructed and impermeable surfaces installed, this further limits where water can be absorbed into the ground as well as how it can be diverted.

Our country was founded as a “nation under God.” God and Biblical values were very much a part of this country’s beginnings. And because of our Christian-Judeo ethic we were clear-eyed and sure-footed. When America started out honoring God, then God honored American and poured His blessings on this country. But things changed and a contrary wind began to blow across the home of the brave and the land of the free.

There’s a whole lot of mowing going on around town and all over the state this time of year. Grasses thrive in this hot and humid weather. Drive anywhere, and you will see landscape crews and homeowners out on mowers and with weed whackers or string trimmers trying to tame the weeds and grass. All to start the cycle over again in a week’s time. It’s a daunting task at times. And I, for one, am thankful my husband handles that duty and leaves me to tend the garden and bedding plants.

Rolling crops field tour set for July 25

BUNKIE — A rolling crops field tour by the LSU AgCenter along with state and federal agencies will be held July 25 in St. Landry and Avoyelles parishes.

Participants in the event will include the Louisiana Department of Agriculture and Forestry, the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service.

The tour will start at Nutrien Ag Solutions near Bunkie at 1970 La. Highway 29.

LSU AgCenter vehicles will be provided for traveling to five locations, with departure no later than 8:05 a.m.
