Sheriff alerts area for fake magazine man

Sheriff Azenor Buller today issued a warning to area residents to be on the lookout for magazine salesmen using fake stories to play on the sympathies of their customers.

Several such salesmen and sales women have been picked up by the sheriff's department recently. They had used tales of being orphans and being from Boys Town to influence customers.

Sheriff Buller denounced these tactics as "unethical" and asked parish citizens to watch for persons using "sob stories" to sell their products.

Welsh Lions Club adopts resolution for road project

WELSH - The Welsh Lions Club recently adopted a resolution requesting that the police jury of Jeff Davis Parish rebuild the bridge over Bayou Serpent on the parish due north of Welsh to Kinder to meet the specifications for a hardsurfaced highway.

The resolution also includes a request that the parish governing body ask the State Highway department to include this road in the state road system, and that the road be hard-surfaced.

Joe Naebors, club president, named the following to serve on the road improvement project: M.L. Van Ness, chairman, Jerry Romero and John Lyons.

BICENTENNIAL BEARDS

A beard growing contest is under way in Jeff Davis Parish.

Officially titled the "Jeff Davis Parish Bicentennial Beard Growing Contest" it is sponsored by the Jennings Jaycees and the parish bicentennial committee, according to Jaycee President Jimmy Richert.

Richert said trophies will be awarded in several categories of judging at Lake Arthur July 4.

Entrants must be at least 18 years old and be residents of the parish.

An entry fee of $1 will be charged. Entry blanks will be available Monday at merchants in Jennings, Lake Arthur, Welsh and Elton.

Grid practice to begin

Coach Jerry Simmons has issued his call for fall football practices to start next Monday, Aug. 20, and around 35 aspirants for Bulldog positions are expected to answer the call.

With the first football game of the year only three weeks away, the coach has a hard task to get his rather green squad whipped in shape for the opener which will see the strong Opelousas High School team come here for three season’s initial fray on Sept. 14.

Bronco Stars fall to Scott

YOUNGSVILLE – Although the Jennings Bronco All-Stars punched their ticket to the South Zone Tournament next week in Deer Park, Texas, on Monday night with a semi-final win over Carencro, the junior Dogs fell to Scott for a second time in the tournament Tuesday night by a final of 8-5. Both teams will advance to the South Zone Tournament to square off with other qualifying teams from regions of Texas and Florida for the right to advance to the Bronco World Series to be held in Laredo, Texas.

Lynn gets MLB-best 12th win as Rangers beat Astros 5-0

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Lance Lynn had more strikes thrown than words used postgame to describe his major league-best 12th victory, one that got the Texas Rangers off to the kind of start their manager had hoped for coming out of the All-Star break.

The short answers have become as common for the big right-hander as his impressive outings on the mound.

Lynn matched his season high with 11 strikeouts in seven strong innings and the Rangers beat the AL West-leading Houston Astros 5-0 in the only game Thursday night when Major League Baseball resumed its schedule.
