She was the highlight of the afternoon. I did not get her name but she and her friend, also unknown, arrived at their seats at the stadium frothing with joy. She, I’m going to call her Joyce, had a continuous smile, and her friend, I’ll call her Mary, was a perfect foil for her friend’s verbal offerings. It was as if she knew us all and immediately involved herself in our lives, and we, in hers.

She was a breast cancer survivor, she told us, and was without breasts.

Ga. election officials accused of destroying evidence

ATLANTA (AP) — In a federal court filing, lawyers for election integrity advocates accuse Georgia election officials of intentionally destroying evidence that could show unauthorized access to the state election system and potential manipulation of election results.

One man chosen for African-American draft call

Jeff Davis draft board had no difficulty this month in meeting its African-American draft call.

State headquarters requisitioned the local board for but a single black individual from the parish for January.

The selectee was 23-year-old Heywood Berry, Jennings, who was a volunteer and hence drew precedence over all others. He will go on to the Lafayette induction station next Tuesday as the whole contingent and will be "acting corporal and group" all combined. He is married and has one child.

Funeral services for Arthur James Benoit, 59, of Lake Arthur were held Saturday, July 27, 2019, at 3 p.m. in Miguez Chapel in Jennings, with Chaplain Tim Bergen officiating.

Visitation began on Saturday at 10 a.m. and continued until time of service.

Cremation will follow under the direction of Miguez Funeral Home.

Mr. Benoit was born in Lake Arthur on June 20, 1960, to Louis and Mary Jane Marceaux Benoit.

After his service in the Army he moved back to Lake Arthur and remained there until his death. He worked as a tankerman in the petrochemical industry.

Kathleen Christian Goebel

Funeral services for Mrs. Kathleen Christian Goebel, 89, of Elton will be held at Miguez Funeral Home in Jennings Tuesday, July 30, 2019, at 11 a.m.

Visitation will be held at the funeral home Monday, July 29, 2019, from 5-8 p.m. and will resume Tuesday from 9 a.m. until time of service.

Burial will follow in China Cemetery.

Mrs. Goebel passed away July 25, 2019, in Lake Charles Memorial Hospital surrounded by her loving family.

Laissez Les Bon Temps Rouler Health Fair at COA

A variety of vendors visited the Council on Aging’s Laissez Les Bon Temps Rouler Health Fair on Thursday morning. Area seniors were able to obtain information on services available to them and free health screenings. Attendees also had the opportunity to sample Cajun cuisine including jambalaya, beignets and king cake.

 

Golf Tourney proceeds benefit CADA

Following the Sheriff Ivy Woods 7th Annual Golf Tournament benefiting the Communities Against Domestic Abuse (CADA), the sheriff and members of his staff donated a check for $9,000. From 2013 to date, the tournament fundraiser has generated over $70,000 in donations to benefit the work and services CADA provides for survivors of domestic abuse. Reluctant youngsters may have a seemingly innate resistance to vegetables, but parents should stay the course, as the importance of making fruit and vegetables a routine part of one’s daily diet is hard to overstate.

Dustin and Shannon Fontenot of Jennings announce the birth of their son, Hudson Cade Fontenot, born July 1, 2019. Hudson weighed eight pounds, eight ounces at birth and was 20 inches long. Siblings include older brothers Hayden Fontenot and Grayson Fontenot of Jennings. Maternal grandparents include Robbie and Becky Fruge of Jennings. Paternal grandparents include the late Dr. Nathan Fontenot, Jr., and Jean Fontenot of Jennings. Great-grandparents include the late Gene Fontenot and Nathan Fontenot, Sr., of Hayes, the late Beulah Marcantel, the late Robert Fruge, the late Dr. H.A.

Peanuts are a beloved snack that are as healthy as they are tasty. Despite their somewhat misleading name, peanuts actually are legumes and grow beneath the ground. Legumes are edible seeds enclosed in pods, whereas true nuts grow on trees. Regardless of their botanical classification, peanuts are enjoyed in many different recipes, both savory and sweet.
