CADA receives clean audit

A state audit recently released on Jeff Davis Communities Against Domestic Violence (CADA)’s revealed healthy finances, with no finding of noncompliance listed of the entities financial statements.

The 30-page audit report on the fiscal year ending Dec. 31, 2018 was completed by Mike B. Gillespie, of Jennings.

Total assets for the fiscal year showed growth, coming in at $307,365, up from $256,248 in 2017. Liabilities came in flush for the last two fiscal years, according to the report.

JDP unemployment numbers show growth for June

Recent results showed the unemployment rate for the month of June dropping nearly one percentage point less than June 2018.

According to preliminary estimates released this week by the Louisiana Workforce Commission (LWC), the unemployment rate in Jeff Davis for June was 5.2 percent, versus a rate of 6.1 percent in 2018 for the same month. LWC releases the report each month that looks at non-seasonally adjusted employment for the state.

Planned outage announced for Elton JDEC customers

ELTON - Routine maintenance has been scheduled and residents are being notified that power will be temporarily disconnected.

Residents who receive services provided by Jeff Davis Electric Co-Op will be affected in areas surrounding the Town of Elton.

“Crews will be working at the Tupper Substation on Monday, Aug. 5,” said work order associate Tina Monceaux. “The outage will begin at 10 p.m. and may last up to four hours during that night.”

(AP) - The roughly 2,000 state and local governments suing the drug industry over the deadly opioid crisis have yet to see any verdicts or reach any big national settlements but are already tussling with each other over how to divide any money they collect.

The reason: Some of them want to avoid what happened 20 years ago, when states agreed to a giant settlement with the tobacco industry and used most of the cash on projects that had little to do with smoking’s toll.

Sailing to America: Teen to bring her climate activism to US

STOCKHOLM (AP) — Greta Thunberg, the Swedish teenager whose social media-savvy brand of eco-activism has inspired tens of thousands of students in Europe to skip classes and protest for faster action against climate change, said Monday that she plans to take her message to America the old-fashioned way: by boat.

The 16-year-old tweeted that she’ll sail across the Atlantic aboard a high-tech racing yacht, leaving Britain next month to attend U.N. climate summits in New York in September and Santiago, Chile, in December.

Woman set to replace Puerto Rico’s governor doesn’t want job

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) — The woman who is supposed to replace Puerto Rico’s embattled governor announced Sunday that she doesn’t want the job as the U.S. territory reels from political crisis.

Justice Secretary Wanda Vázquez said in a Twitter post that she hopes Gov. Ricardo Rosselló will appoint a secretary of state before resigning Aug. 2 as planned.
