COA’s Country Store Fundraiser to benefit area senior citizens

The Council on Aging (COA) is preparing for its most profitable benefit of the year. From 7-11 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 5, the Country Store Fundraiser is scheduled to take place.

“Here at COA, we depend on donations,” said Activities Director Kim Benoit. “This has been our most successful fundraiser in the past.”

The Country Store will feature donated items that will be up for grabs for those who may be in need of them.

“We’ve began collecting a few things already,” said Benoit. “If anyone is cleaning out their houses, we will accept more donations.”

CHIPS Youth Theatre sets registration

Registration to join a Chip Off the Old Block Youth (CHIPS) Theatre will be held for any area youth who may be dreaming of performing on stage. The classes have been divided into three separate age groups.

“Beginning at 3:30 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 19, children in grades third through fifth can register for this year’s classes,” said Jeff Davis Arts Council Executive Director Tesha Onellion. “This will be a time to meet the director and learn about the program.”

Several animals are hoping to find forever homes in Jeff Davis Parish. Funeral services for Garrette Dean Duhon, Sr., 66, of Jennings will be held at Matthews and Son Funeral Home in Jennings Thursday, Aug. 15, 2019, at 10 a.m., with Reverend Mickey Istre officiating.  

A gathering of family and friends will be held at the funeral home beginning Wednesday, Aug. 14, 2019, from 2:30-9 p.m.,and will resume Thursday, Aug. 15, 2019, from 8 a.m. until the time of his service at 10 a.m.

Burial will follow in Greenwood Cemetery.

Ester “Marie” Agent entered Heavenly rest on Sunday, Aug. 11, 2019, at her home surrounded by her loving family.  She was 75.

A private ceremony will be held at 3 p.m. today, Wednesday, Aug. 14, 2019.  A celebration of life for family and friends will be held at a later date.

Marie was preceded in death by her son, Rick Paden-Agent, and two sisters, Mary Allen and Faye Kruse.

PJ meeting to address rezoning requests, jail space agreement

The Jeff Davis Police Jury will be addressing several issues at its regularly scheduled meeting today including a request to rezone property from agricultural to commercial for a catering business.

The request is being made by Dorothy M. Lacour Lapoint for a change in zoning for property located in Division Three off U.S. 165. The change in zoning is in order to allow for a business selling catering and plate lunches.

A public hearing in connection with the request will be held during the meeting which begins at 5 p.m. today at the Police Jury Annex.

China’s Xi gets tougher on Trump after new tariff threat

Malaysia police: Family confirms body as missing London teen

SEREMBAN, Malaysia (AP) — Malaysian police said Tuesday the family of a missing 15-year-old London girl has positively identified a naked body found near the nature resort where she disappeared over a week ago.

Police said rescuers earlier Tuesday found the body of a female Caucasian beside a small stream in steep terrain about 2 ½ kilometers (1 ½ miles) from the Dusun eco-resort in southern Negeri Sembilan state, where Nora Anne Quoirin went missing Aug. 4. The body was airlifted to a hospital for identification and an autopsy.

No injuries reported in two-vehicle crash

Shortly after 9 a.m. on Tuesday morning, two vehicles were involved in a crash near the intersection of L.A. 26 and Racca Road. No major injuries were reported.
