LAHS Students Visit San Francisco

Students from Lake Arthur High and their chaperones enjoyed an educational field trip to San Francisco, Calif., July 31-Aug. 4. There they enjoyed visits to Alcatraz Island, Fisherman’s Wharf, Golden Gate Bridge, Walt Disney Family Museum, Presidio and the Muir Woods National Monument in Mill Valley. The trip also included tours of Sausalito, Chinatown and the Haight-Ashbury district,as well as a night tour of San Francisco.

DERIDDER NAMES NEW POLICE CHIEF

DERIDDER (AP) — A Louisiana city has named a new police chief.

KPLC-TV reports DeRidder police Lt. Craig Richard will immediately assume duties as the department’s chief of police. Mayor Misty Clanton announced Wednesday that Richard will replace former DeRidder police Chieff John Gott, who retired in 2018 after serving nine years as chief.

DROUGHT AFFECTING ABOUT ONE MILLION IN DEEP SOUTH

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) — A new assessment shows about 1 million people are being affected by drought in the Deep South, but conditions are improving slightly in some areas.

The latest report released Thursday by the U.S. Drought Monitor shows parts of Alabama, Georgia and South Carolina all have regions that are too dry.

Qualifying ends

The qualifying period ended Friday, with 35 local candidates in the parish signing up to run in the Oct. 12 Gubernatorial election.

According to the Louisiana Secretary of State’s Office (SOS), Republicans Mark Abraham, Kevin Berken and Johnny Guinn all qualified this week for the race for District 25 State Senator, a seat formerly held by termed-out Senator Dan “Blade” Morrish.

Marion “Butch” Fox, Shalon Latour and Troy Romero, all Republicans, signed up for the District 37 State Representative seat.

The Zigler Art Museum (ZAM) has a permanent collection of art but it also features exhibits from other various artists.

A new exhibit is now on display that cannot be found just anywhere.

“We are honored to have the Artwork of Kathryn Keller at ZAM,” said museum director Celia Joe Black. “It is very special to have an artist of this caliber in our small town.”

Black said the museum has 38 paintings on display, most of which are on sale.

Club hears about Social Security

For couples who are around the age of 65 this year, at least one of the pair is expected to live to about 93. Longevity rates are only increasing each year.

Sam Bruner with BlackRock, the largest risk management firm in the world, told Jennings Kiwanis Club members this week that understanding aspects of the complex Social Security system is vital to planning for retirement.

Determining exactly when and how to file for Social Security benefits requires forethought as well.

Chiefs eager to see rookies in first preseason game

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (AP) — New Kansas City Chiefs defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo acknowledged after a spirited practice this week that he generally is reluctant to start rookies until they’ve earned their stripes.

“I’m still old-fashioned that way,” Spagnuolo said.

Might be time to enter the modern age.

It’s time to think about fall-blooming plants

It’s hot out there. And it’s hard to believe summer is drawing to a close. Kids will start back to school in just a few weeks, and football season is so close it is palpable. One thing I get really excited about is the hope of cooler weather and fall plants.

Several plants found blooming in the summertime will carry over into the fall in Louisiana. They include butterfly bush, firebush, Turk’s cap, cassia, angel’s trumpet, salvias and sedums. You can also continue to plant marigolds and zinnias for great fallflowering bedding plants.
