Louisiana Department of Agriculture and Forestry (LDAF) Commissioner Mike Strain, D.V.M., is reminding hunters that as duck season approaches, a quarantine for Roseau cane scale remains in effect in Jeff Davis Parish.

The scale, native to China and Japan, is an insect that destroys Roseau cane which is vegetation that helps protect Louisiana’s coast and poses a threat to the health and welfare of Louisiana’s wetlands. It also poses a threat to sorghum, sugarcane and rice industries, according to a press release.

Election statistics released

Nearly 46 percent of voters turned out for the Gubernatorial Primary Election Oct. 12, according to official post election results released by the Louisiana Secretary of State’s Office (SOS) this week.

A total of 9,390 or 45.3 percent of the 20,728 voters eligible to cast their ballots in the election turned out, according to SOS.

Of those qualified voters, 48.2 percent of Democrats turned out or 4,005 voters. There were 3,545 Republicans or 54.8 percent turning out to vote and 1,840 or 30.9 percent of voters in the other category.

Veterans Day project seeks info

In observance of Veterans Day, Jennings Daily News encourages the public to share photos of any living veteran of the United States military. Dems push impeachment rules package through House

WASHINGTON (AP) — Democrats rammed a package of ground rules for their impeachment inquiry of President Donald Trump through a sharply divided House Thursday, the chamber’s first formal vote in a fight that could stretch into the 2020 election year.

The vote was 232-196, with all Republicans against the resolution and two Democratic defectors joining them.

The vote laid down the rules as lawmakers transition from weeks of closed-door interviews with witnesses to public hearings and ultimately to possible votes on whether to recommend Trump’s removal from office.

Foo Fact of the Game: In a contest that went back and forth with seven lead changes, two Jennings turnovers in the second half helped a talented Lake Charles College Prep (LCCP) take a 45-35 win over the Bulldogs.

Coin Toss: Jennings won the coin toss and deferred to the second half.

Game Ball: Goes to PK Ian Mullen, who for the second week was 5-for-5 in his PAT attempts. In eight games, Mullen has made 39 of 40 PAT attempts.

Two new Calif. fires burn homes, send residents fleeing

SIMI VALLEY, Calif. (AP) — Strong winds fanned new Southern California wildfires on Thursday, burning homes and forcing residents to flee their homes in a repeat of the frightening scenario already faced by tens of thousands across the state.

The latest blazes erupted in the heavily populated inland region east of Los Angeles as strong, seasonal Santa Ana winds continued to blow with gusts of up to 60 mph (96 kph) predicted to last until the evening before they fade away.

2020 Democrats need a star for their show

With President Trump raging like Shakespeare’s mad King Lear on the heath, it can be difficult for an entirely sane politician to get an audience. Assuming, that is, that any psychologically normal person would insert himself or herself into the bizarre spectacle that will be the 2020 U.S. presidential election.
