Free cyber security workshop offered

With the leaps and bounds of today’s technology comes the daunting task of protecting sensitive data.

At 6 p.m. Monday, Nov. 11, Infotech Solutions will team up with the Jennings branch of the parish library system to offer a workshop on being proactive in protecting data and personal identity, both at home and at work.

Halloween has a 2,000-year-old history steeped in superstition, including the belief the day marked the transition from summer to winter, when the barrier between the world of the living and the afterlife becomes blurred and those who are long-dead draw near.

The ghosts and ghouls of Halloween night are a reminder of the holiday’s dark origins in ancient Celtic History when Oct. 31 was believed to be the night when the dead returned to earth.

The City of Jennings is hosting citywide trick-ortreating from 5:30-7:30 p.m., and city police would like to remind those traveling on roadways to be cautious while out collecting popcorn balls and candy corn.

Jennings Police Chief Danny Semmes said traffic will be handled differently this year in an effort to reduce street congestion and improve public safety.

Halloween traffic for the area of Magnolia Drive, Comfort Lane, Acadian Drive and Royale Drive will be affected by this plan, Semmes said. This is the busiest area in the city for Halloween foot and vehicle traffic.

A Mass of Christian Burial for Kenneth James Clement will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, Nov. 2, 2019, in St. Lawrence Catholic Church, with Rev. William Miller officiating. Funeral home visitation will be held from 4-8 p.m. Friday and will continue from 9 a.m. Saturday until time of services. A rosary will be recited at 6 p.m. Friday in the funeral home chapel. Burial will be in St. Lawrence Community Cemetery under the direction of Miguez Funeral Home of Jennings. Ken passed away Tuesday, Oct. 29, 2019, in Houston, Texas.

Jennings Animal Shelter to host adoption day

The public is invited to pick out their new best furry friend Saturday at an adoption event in Jennings.

The Jennings Animal Shelter is hoping to find “furever” homes for some of its residents by hosting an adoption day from 12-2 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 2, at Tractor Supply in Jennings.

“Come pick out your new best friend,” said Animal Control Officer Chelsi Leger. “Right now the shelter is full and we have around 19 dogs and one cat that are looking for their new families. We really need to find homes for these animals.”

Leger said the adoption fee is $20.

SFM receives grant for smoke alarm program

Funds have been secured by the state help to ensure the safety of residents.

According to a press release, the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s (FEMA) Assistance to Firefighters Grant award, worth $55,000, will allow the Louisiana State Fire Marshal’s (SFM) Office to boost its smoke alarm inventory for Operation Save-A-Life efforts by 5,000 units, just in time for cooler weather.

State Fire Marshal Chief H. “Butch” Browning said he is thrilled that the Operation Save-A-Life program was considered worthy for the support of this grant.

Lake Arthur to face off with Notre Dame Pioneers

LAKE ARTHUR – The Lake Arthur Tigers won the big battle of Jeff Davis Parish last week with a 24-13 win over the Welsh Greyhounds in district play. That win over Welsh was the first for the Tigers since 2012, and they now stand at 5-3 for the season and 2-1 in District 6-2A action.

“We played our most complete game of the year against Welsh,” stated Tiger head coach Mark Deshotel. “Our defense absolutely played their best game of the season.”
