Malnati leads at Houston Open

HUMBLE, Texas (AP) — Expectant father Peter Malnati started strong and shot 7-under 65 Friday to lead at the Houston Open after morning rain and lightning prevented the second round from being completed.

First-round co-leader Austin Cook, who opened with an 8-under 64, briefly got to 11-under before dropping all the way to 6-under through 15 holes before play was suspended due to darkness at 7 p.m. Talor Gooch, who started the day tied with Cook, improved to 9-under through 14 holes and is a shot behind Malnati’s lead.

Seahawks could be down 2 offensive linemen vs. Browns

RENTON, Wash. (AP) — The Seattle Seahawks could be without starting offensive linemen Duane Brown and D.J. Fluker for Sunday’s game at Cleveland.

Brown and Fluker were both listed as doubtful on Friday’s injury report. Fluker left Seattle’s game against the Los Angeles Rams with a hamstring injury, while Brown has played through a biceps injury for a couple of weeks.

NASA launches satellite to explore where air meets space

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) — NASA launched a satellite on Thursday night to explore the mysterious, dynamic region where air meets space.

The satellite — called Icon, short for Ionospheric Connection Explorer — rocketed into orbit following a two-year delay. It was dropped from a plane flying over the Atlantic off the Florida coast.

Five seconds after the satellite’s release, the attached Pegasus rocket ignited, sending Icon on its way.

AKCAKALE, Turkey (AP) — Turkish forces pushed deeper into northeastern Syria on Friday, the third day of Ankara’s offensive against U.S.-allied Syrian Kurdish fighters, as casualties mounted, international criticism of the campaign intensified and thousands of civilians fled the violence.

PJ requests aid for bridge replacement

The parish is requesting assistance from the federal government for the replacement of a bridge on West Racca Road.

On Wednesday, Oct. 9, Jeff Davis Police Jurors approved the West Racca Road Bridge to be replaced under the Federal Off-System Highway Bridge Program 2019-2020.

The bridge needs to be completely replaced and has damage to the pilings.

“In the past the pilings have been repaired,” Police Juror Steve Eastman said. “They are going to take those pilings out because that seems to be the main problem.”

Communities Against Domestic Violence (CADA) is taking a stand against domestic abuse and would like to spread awareness not only this month but year-round as well. Governor John Bel Edwards and Mayor Henry Guinn recently signed a proclamation designating October as National Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

“We encourage the community to wear purple during the month along with pink, as it is also Breast Cancer Awareness Month,” said CADA outreach coordinator Cynthia Petry. “We have placed purple ribbons down Main Street and throughout Jeff Davis Parish.”

ELTON - Members of Mount Pilgrim Baptist Church will host a Breast Cancer Awareness Walk in order to raise funds for those battling the disease. The benefit walk will be held on Saturday, Oct. 19, at the church, located at 1409 Martin Luther King Drive in Elton.

“Registration will begin at 8 a.m. and will cost $5 per person,” said organizer Venessa Livingston-Cormier. “At 7:45 a.m. the 2019 Elton Lady Indians Basketball Champions will join attendees to begin with stretching and warm up exercises.”

The walk is scheduled to start at 8 a.m. and span over a two-mile stretch.

Marcus Cain Memorial Park upgrades underway

Plans are moving forward for the renovations at Marcus Cain Memorial Park on Peters Street in Jennings.

Work crews began pouring the concrete slab this week that will become one of the largest pavilions in Jeff Davis Parish.

“After the concrete cures and the post tension slab is tightened, the next step will be erecting all the iron work,” said Jennings Mayor Henry Guinn.
