Breast cancer is the second most common cause of death for women, as well as the most common type of cancer discovered in women.
According to Center for Disease Control (CDC) data, in 2016, the latest year for which incidence data are available, 245,299 new cases of female breast cancer were reported in the nation, and 41,487 women died. For every 100,000 women, 124 new cases were reported and 20 died of cancer. In Louisiana that year, 3,494 breast cancer cases were reported to the CDC. In Jeff Davis Parish, there were 96 new cases.
