The Southwest Louisiana Veterans Home held its annual Fishing Rodeo. Elton FFA members and other volunteers spent the morning casting lines and hearing the veterans’ stories.

Documentary highlights rape allegations at JDP jail

(AP) - At least a half-dozen women told authorities that deputies raped and trafficked them to male inmates inside a longtroubled jail in southwestern Louisiana, according to newly unearthed state and FBI records.

The records offer a harrowing account of sexual assault being traded as currency in a contraband ring that pervaded the Jefferson Davis Parish jail. Three deputies were charged in the 2002 corruption case. One of them remains a small-town police officer in Louisiana, The Associated Press found.

Trump administration ramps up deportations to Cuba

MIAMI (AP) — After seeking asylum in the United States at the Mexican border, Pablo Sanchez was placed in a detention center and is now facing what has become an increasingly common scenario under President Donald Trump: deportation to Cuba.

Twelve people were booked into the parish jail by the Jeff Davis Parish Sheriff’s Office over the past week.

Kaynan Montae Deshotel, 23, of Jennings, was charged with domestic abuse battery, disturbing the peace offensive language and resisting an officer.

MISS JENNINGS CONTEST CONTROVERSY CLEARED

The annual Miss Jennings contest will be held as scheduled this year, the local Junior Chamber of Commerce announced today.

The question arose after Catholic clergy opposition to bathing beauty contests was reported in out-of-town newspapers and magazines.

The problem first came up when the reigning Miss Jennings, Kathleen Thibodeaux, withdrew from the Miss Louisiana contest after her priest explained the church's policy on bathing suit appearances.

Miss Thibodeaux's withdrawal was the first of three nationally-publicized cases involving beauty contests.

Existence of local ‘hippie house’ told

The existence of a local "hippie house" was made public for the first time Tuesday when the Jennings City Council heard a plea from some 80 "concerned parents" that "something be done" about the situation.

A representative of the petitioners, Home Guidry, said a house on Gallup Street had "undesirable activities" going on that needed "removing."

Interim Mayor Clovis Bailey said city police had been "talking about it (the house) a long, long time. Maybe it's time to do something about it now."

Pastor issues full statement on bathing beauties

The Rev. John J. Windt, pastor of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church here, today issued a statement explaining the Church's stand on bathing beauty contests.

Father Windt made the comments after several statements attributed to him appeared in an out-of-town newspaper article on the Miss Jennings contest.

Refugee Fund To Be Helped

Strand Theater is expected to be crowded January 26 when the Southern Amusement Company, cooperating with several thousand other theaters and motion picture companies in the nation, will turn over all collections from the box offices to the European refugee fund.

A good, long penitentiary sentence is what the miscreant mentioned above really needs.
