Weekend emergency service now at JALH

The Jennings American Legion (JAL) Hospital is now offering weekend emergency room services from 12 noon Saturday until 6 a.m. Monday. A physician will be on duty 24 hours.

"We would like to emphasize this is an emergency service and emergency patients will be seen on a priority basis. The weekend emergency room service is an excellent service to the community, but could get out of hand, so we are asking for the community's cooperation," Terry Terrebonne, JALH’s new administrator, said.

Qualified voters in the election for railroad tax

To be entitled to vote at the ensuing election for the railroad tax, a man must be a qualified voter as in any other election, and secondly he must be a property taxpayer.

To carry the election will require a majority of the votes cast and a majority of the property represented by the votes cast.

Every voter must sign his name on the back of his ticket and put the amount of his assessment.

Poll books will be at every precinct showing who are qualified voters and the amount of their assessment.

Rice Belt loop playoff decided

WELSH - The commissioners of the Rice Belt Conference met here last night and set a schedule for the playoff in the loop for the three teams, Kinder, Lake Arthur and Welsh.

Playoff arrangements call for two games by each team, one at home and the other away, but it will not decide anything.

If the teams are tied at the end of the playoff, the winner will be decided by a plus and minus basis, taking the point spread between the scores.

All games are scheduled for 6:30, with just the varsity teams clashing.

SCHOOL BOARD ADDRESSES NEW FAD LASER POINTERS

Safety issues will be addressed at Thursday's Jeff Davis Parish School Board meeting concerning a new fad among high school students, laser pointers.

A proposed change of policy is on the agenda for the 6 p.m. regular February meeting and will be voted on by board members. The proposed policy states, "Student possession or use of a laser pointer or similar device at school, on school property, while attending a school or extracurricular activity (even when not held on school campus), or on school-provided or arranged transportation is prohibited.

HIGH COURT WON’T MOVE TRIAL OVER CONFEDERATE STATUE

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — The lawyer for a black man seeking to move his trial from a Louisiana courthouse with a Confederate statue out front says the state’s Supreme Court won’t move the trial. Niles Haymer says the court denied the appeal by a 6-0 vote. One justice abstained. No reason was given.

Haymer’s client, Ronnie Anderson, faces a charge of illegal possession of a stolen firearm. Anderson argues the Confederate monument outside the East Feliciana Parish Courthouse is a “symbol of racial intolerance, oppression and intimidation.”

Bethel Christian School recently held a Grandparents Day Program to honor those special people who play an important role in students’ lives. One grandmother made her way to the school to spend time with her granddaughter when something unexpected happened, not once but twice.

“We had a nice breakfast in the gym area and enjoyed the children’s program in the auditorium,” said Welsh resident Mona Eager. “I was wearing two rings that day, my wedding ring on my left hand and my anniversary ring on the right.”

Report: Parish job growth on the rise

Recent results from the state show job growth in the parish continues to rise over last year.

According to preliminary estimates released this week by the Louisiana Workforce Commission (LWC), the unemployment rate in Jeff Davis for August was 4.8 percent, versus a rate of 5.2 for July and 5.1 in August 2018.

LWC releases a report each month that examines non-seasonally adjusted employment for the state by parish. There were 12,664 listed as employed and 643 without jobs during the month of August.

Hannah Sonnier, a senior at Hathaway High School, was named the 2019 Jeff Davis Parish Fair Queen during the annual pageant held Thursday at Glen Daigle Memorial Arena in Jennings. The young queen is the daughter of Pat and Kim Sonnier.
