Shooting Near The Oil Field

Just as we go to press, information reached this office of a shooting affray about two miles from the Jennings oil field.

Two brothers, Gerald and John Jennico, got into a dispute over a wagon. Gerald shot his brother with a shotgun. One of his hands was badly lacerated and a part of the shot entered in the body.

Gerald has skipped.

VETERANS DAY PROJECT SEEKS PHOTOS, INFO

In observance of Veterans Day, Jennings Daily News encourages the public to share photos of any living veteran of the United States military. TRUMP RETURNING TO LA. AHEAD OF RACE RUNOFF

BATON ROUGE (AP) — President Donald Trump is heightening his support for Republican businessman Eddie Rispone in the Louisiana governor’s race, planning a rally next week in the northeastern end of the state.

Trump announced he’ll travel to Monroe for a Wednesday evening event, in the middle of the weeklong early voting period for the Nov. 16 election.

In addition, the Republican president released an endorsement video Thursday. He urges Louisiana voters to cast their ballots for Rispone and oust incumbent John Bel Edwards, the Deep South’s only Democratic governor.

HOLIDAY SHOPPING, EVENTS BEGIN IN JDP

LAKE ARTHUR – The downtown area here will soon be filled with the sights and sounds of the Christmas season. Registration for the annual Glitter and Garland craft extravaganza and Black Iron Pot Cook-Off is now underway.

“Vendors from around the parish are invited to showcase their handcrafted items,” said event chairman Joanna Lejeune. “This year’s event will take place from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 16.”

Lejeune said they are in search of vendors offering unique items just in time for Christmas.

JPD warns public of phone scam

The Jennings Police Department would like to alert residents of a potential new telephone scam.

Police Chief Danny Semmes said Friday that city police received a new case where a citizen received a text message from a local number claiming to be associates of their neighbors.

“Once the scammers have established your trust by making you believe they are friends of your friends they will tell you that you have won a large amount of money and have you complete a form with personal information,” he said.

Two in custody for tractor theft

KINDER - Two men are currently in custody for stealing a tractor from a farm near Kinder earlier this month.

Jeff Davis Sheriff’s Office (JDSO) Chief Deputy Chris Ivey said surveillance video led detectives to arrest Bradley Montou, 61, of Oberlin and Eric Jeffery Webb, 34, of Deridder on trespassing and felony theft charges.

On Monday, a complaint was made by a landowner that a Ford 8-N tractor had been stolen from a farm near U.S. 165 in Kinder.

The landowner provided surveillance footage of the individuals entering and leaving the property on Oct. 17.

Taste and Sell tickets available

WELSH - Friends of the Welsh Museum now have tickets on sale for the annual Taste and Sell fundraiser, which will be held on Thursday, Nov. 14.”

“Tickets are $10 each and can be purchased from any museum volunteer or they can be picked up at the museum between the hours of 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Monday-Friday, “ said Mary Sue Lyon. “We are also still selling $1 raffle tickets for a chance to win a LSU quilt hand-stitched by Delores Derouen. The winner will be drawn during the Taste and Sell.”

Persimmon: the other orange fall fruit

Persimmons, in my humble opinion, are highly underrated fruit. I don’t know many people who actually grow and eat them, but they are an excellent fruit. And they grow well in Louisiana. I first tried persimmons in a pomology course I took at LSU. Some are astringent (the kind that make your face pucker), and some are sweet and juicy with a unique texture. We got to try both.

Citrus growers keep going despite weather, market setbacks

BELLE CHASSE — Louisiana citrus is coming in, and the crop is good, according to two Plaquemines Parish producers. Joseph Ranatza Jr., owner of Star Nursery in Plaquemines Parish, said he started picking on Oct. 7, and it looks like he’s going to have a good crop this year. “My season is going very well this year versus last year,” he said. “Last year, the grocery stores bought a lot of foreign fruit, and that really hurt us.” It’s hard for Louisiana growers to compete with foreign producers, who have lower labor costs and less restrictions, he said.
