Recreational red snapper season reopens for weekends only

BATON ROUGE - Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) Secretary Jack Montoucet signed a declaration of emergency to reopen the recreational red snapper season on weekends only, effective this weekend, until further notice. Weekends are Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.

The latest catch statistics recorded by LA Creel, LDWF’s near real-time data collection program, is 777,830 pounds, or 95 percent of Louisiana’s allocation (816,439 pounds). This estimate covers the period through October 13.

FRANCHISES

The NFL didn’t see any mergers or expansion in the decade, but a few franchises were on the move.

The Oakland Raiders made their long-awaited trek down south on the Pacific Coast Highway to Los Angeles in 1982, giving the league two teams in the Hollywood area with the Rams settled in Anaheim.

John Elway’s search for a quarterback continues

DENVER (AP) — With Joe Flacco joining Drew Lock on injured reserve, the Broncos head into Sunday’s game against the Browns with two quarterbacks, Brandon Allen and Brett Rypien, who haven’t thrown a single pass in the NFL.

Allen is a 27-year-old, fourth-year pro from Arkansas who becomes Denver’s sixth starting quarterback in the post-Peyton Manning era when the Broncos (2-6) host the Browns (2-5).

His backup is the nephew of 1992 Super Bowl MVP Mark Rypien and was promoted from the practice squad Friday when Flacco went on IR with a herniated disk in his neck.

DeSean Jackson set to return for Eagles

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — DeSean Jackson is ready to return to action.

The speedy receiver plans to play for the first time in two months when the Philadelphia Eagles (4-4) host the Chicago Bears (3-4) on Sunday. Jackson practiced this week on a limited basis and is officially listed as questionable.

“Definitely been a long process,” Jackson said Friday. “We’ll see how it goes. It’s just a thing I’m dealing with right now. Not too many answers for it. It’s an uncommon injury. I’m trying to do everything I can to take care of it and get it right.”
