Saints QB Brees in vintage form as playoffs approach

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Vintage Drew Brees is back.

Or so it would seem the past two weeks, during which the Saints’ 40-yearold quarterback has passed for nine touchdowns and 656 yards, setting career and single-game NFL records in the process.

His return to stellar form comes at a good time for the playoff-bound Saints.

Cole, Yankees finalize record $324M, 9-year contract

NEW YORK (AP) — Gerrit Cole brought along a sign for the news conference to announce his signing with the New York Yankees: a crinkled poster board that read “Yankee Fan Today Tomorrow Forever.”

Then 11, Cole was caught on camera holding up that placard in the seats at Game 6 of the 2001 World Series in Phoenix. The lettering of the tape he used has faded from blue to tan during years in a closet.

Howard leads Marquette over Grambling St. 93-72

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Markus Howard had 26 points as Marquette rolled past Grambling State 93-72 on Tuesday night.

Howard, now tied for the nation’s scoring lead at 25.2 points per game, had 18 points on 6-of-10 3-point shooting, adding his other eight points from the freethrow line.

Sacar Anim scored 18 points, including five 3-pointers, for Marquette (8-2), which has won all five of its home games. Jamal Cain added 11 points. Koby McEwen had 10 points.

Welsh group opposed to vote on school proposal

WELSH - A group of taxpayers here say they want the majority of the Jeff Davis School Board to vote against sending school tax proposals to ballots next year.

The independent Welsh Bond Steering Committee hosted an open meeting Tuesday at the Welsh Community Center. There committee members shared concerns regarding how to best finalize and fund plans for construction and renovation in the Welsh-Roanoke consolidated school district.

The Louisiana Secretary of State’s Office (SOS) is reminding inactive voters to update their records.

Weather officials: 24 tornadoes hit South over 2 days

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) — At least two dozen tornadoes hit the Southeast this week in a deadly outbreak of severe weather, assessments by the National Weather Service show.

Survey teams from regional weather service offices found evidence that twisters struck from western Louisiana to southern Georgia on Monday and Tuesday, with 10 tornadoes in Mississippi alone, according to reports issued online. Another nine touched down in Alabama, survey teams found.

Louisiana was hit by three twisters, and two struck Georgia.

Puerto Rico to approve cockfighting, defy federal ban

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) — Puerto Rico will defy the U.S. government and approve a law to keep cockfighting alive in a bid to protect a 400-year-old tradition practiced across the island despite a federal ban that goes into effect this week, officials told The Associated Press on Tuesday night.

The move brought cautious rejoicing in the cockfighting business despite concerns that the U.S. territory is trying to override a federal law that President Donald Trump signed a year ago.

Start off the new year with COA’s exercise program

With the new year right around the corner, many will make resolutions to add more exercise to their daily routines. The Council on Aging (COA) is encouraging seniors to take advantage of its wellness program.

“Those looking to get fit in 2020 are invited to come work out with us,” said activities director Kim Benoit. “The program is offered to both men and women who are Jeff Davis Parish residents ages 60 and over.”

Hours of operation are from 7 a.m. until 2:30 p.m., Monday through Thursday and from 7-10:30 a.m. each Friday morning.
