Lack of education affects La.’s workforce

Arecent study showed Louisiana was 2020’s third least educated state in the nation, a problem that is also affecting our unemployment rate and our workforce here.

In Jeff Davis and the surrounding areas, there is a lack of an educated and available workforce for many of the jobs that need to be filled in our area.

This week District 37 State Representative Troy Romero said there is this myth that if you don’t go to college, you won’t be successful. I completely agree.

What makes a dog dangerous?

Officials in Fenton are making the right decision to reconsider a ban on specific breeds from the municipal limits.

The village of Fenton is proposing a new ordinance after facing public backlash over a breed specific law passed in 2019. That law has been suspended for 90 days until officials can come up with a better plan.

Other countries join China in responding to new coronavirus

BEIJING (AP) — Countries in Asia and elsewhere are checking the body temperatures of arriving airline passengers and adopting precautionary quarantine procedures in response to a new coronavirus that has sickened nearly 300 people in China. India, Nigeria, Japan and the United States are some of the countries where airport screening procedures were in place.

The outbreak is believed to have originated in the city of Wuhan in central China.

Survivor stories spotlight Auschwitz liberation anniversary

JERUSALEM (AP) — Shortly before they were rounded up by Nazi troops in Belgium and deported to Auschwitz in 1942, the parents of three-year-old Maurice Gluck placed their only child in the care of a local Christian family. Gluck forgot his Yiddish mother tongue and that he even had parents of his own.

After the war, his devastated father came to claim him and several months later he was introduced to a weeping woman who showered him with hugs and kisses.

“My father said: ‘Look Maurice, this is your mother, Helen,’” he recalled.

The Early Head Start program was created to give all young children the same opportunities to succeed. In November, Save the Children Head Start implemented this service for residents of Jennings.

Certified as infant teachers, Jackie Bowling and Shannon Jones, work with babies from birth up to age one, during their most critical stages of development.

“We follow a creative curriculum that helps stimulate young minds and activate little hands and bodies,” said Bowling. “We can help the babies develop both fine and gross motor skills on an individual basis.”

Fenton mulls utility deposits

FENTON - The council here is proposing to make an amendment that would require new homeowners to pay a deposit on both water and sewer services. In the past, no deposit was required of those who owned their house. With new measures in place, there would be a $50 deposit for each.

“Our renters currently pay a deposit but not our homeowners,” said utility clerk Paige Holman. “Usually our homeowners don’t leave but I am having trouble with people leaving and not paying the final bill.”

Mardi Gras parade registrations underway

Each community across the parish has planned a variety of activities for all to enjoy this Mardi Gras season. From parades to chicken runs, to live music and food, organizers urge area residents to join in on the fun.

Funeral home visitation will be held Tuesday, Jan. 21, from 10:30 a.m. until time of service.

Cremation will follow services.
