Funeral services for Mrs. Beulah Mae Meche, 93, of Jennings will be held Saturday, Jan. 4, 2020, in Miguez Funeral Home Chapel, with Pastor Gary Koopman officiating.

Visitation for Mrs. Meche will be held Friday, Jan. 3, 2020, from 4:30-9 p.m. and will resume Saturday from 8 a.m. until the service time at 10 a.m.

Burial will follow in Greenwood Cemetery.

Mrs. Meche loved riding motorcycles, raising cattle, hunting, cooking for everyone and spending time with her family and friends.

BAGHDAD (AP) — Iran vowed “harsh retaliation” for a U.S. airstrike near Baghdad’s airport that killed a top Iranian general who had been the architect of its interventions across the Middle East, as tensions soared in the wake of the targeted killing.

The killing of Gen. Qassem Soleimani, the head of Iran’s elite Quds Force, marks a major escalation in the standoff between Washington and Iran, which has careened from one crisis to another since President Donald Trump withdrew from the 2015 nuclear deal and imposed crippling sanctions.

One dead, 3 hurt in ‘stabbing incident’ in downtown Austin

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — One person was killed, three others hurt and a suspect was in custody following a “stabbing incident” Friday morning in downtown Austin, police and emergency officials said.

Austin-Travis County EMS said a man in his 20s was pronounced dead and a man in his 50s was taken to a hospital with life-threatening injuries. Two others were being treated on the scene on South Congress Avenue.

Oil prices jump on fears of Iranian retaliation against US

LONDON (AP) — The price of oil surged Friday on concerns that Iran might respond to the killing of its top general by the United States by disrupting global supplies of energy from the Mideast.

If sustained, the rise in oil prices could lead to more expensive car fuel, heating and electricity bills, stifling the global economy at a time when it is already slowing.

News that Gen. Qassem Soleimani, head of Iran’s elite Quds Force, was killed in an air attack at the Baghdad international airport prompted expectations of Iranian retaliation.

Backlog of toxic Superfund clean-ups grows under Trump

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Trump administration has built up the biggest backlog of unfunded toxic Superfund clean-up projects in at least 15 years, nearly triple the number that were stalled for lack of money in the Obama era, according to 2019 figures quietly released by the Environmental Protection Agency over the winter holidays. The accumulation of Superfund projects that are ready to go except for money comes as the Trump administration routinely proposes funding cuts for Superfund and for the EPA in general.

Clemson is the defending national champions and is seeking another title, while LSU has run rampant through their schedule to capture an SEC title and Peach Bowl victory in the semi-finals over Oklahoma in demolishing fashion.

Delpit caps unusual season for LSU with trip to title game

(AP) - Grant Delpit has had an unusual season.

LSU’s star safety switched positions early in the year to compensate for an injured teammate. Later in the season, he was the injured player and the Tigers’ defense suffered from Delpit being limited by a sore ankle.

That didn’t stop Delpit from winning the Thorpe Award as the nation’s top defensive back or keep No. 1 LSU (14-0) from reaching the College Football Playoff with a perfect record.

Boys Little Dribblers registration underway

Registration for Boy’s Little Dribblers is underway for boys ages nine through 14.

Eligible boys must turn nine before Aug. 31 and can’t be 15 after Aug. 31.

Registration forms will be given out at all schools beginning next week, or you can pick one up at the Jennings Recreation Department.
