US sending 3,000 more troops to Mideast as reinforcements

WASHINGTON (AP) — The United States is sending nearly 3,000 more Army troops to the Mideast as reinforcements in the volatile aftermath of the killing of an Iranian general in a strike ordered by President Donald Trump, defense officials said Friday.

EDWARDS ANNOUNCES STATE EDUCATION BOARD MEMBERS

BATON ROUGE (AP) — Gov. John Bel Edwards named his three appointees to Louisiana’s top public school board for the upcoming term, keeping two of his picks from his first four years in office and replacing the third.

The Democratic governor, whose second term begins Jan. 13, announced Thursday that Doris Voitier, superintendent of St. Bernard Parish public schools, and Thomas Roque, superintendent of Catholic schools for the Diocese of Alexandria, will continue as members of the Board of Elementary and Secondary Education.

Qualifying opens for April 4 primary

Qualifying begins this week for the Presidential Preference Primary race slotted for April 4.

According to the Louisiana Secretary of State’s Office (SOS), nominees for Democrat, Republican and Independent parties will have the chance to qualify Thursday, Jan. 8, through Friday, Jan. 10. Voters will also choose their state and parish party committee members this spring.

In order to be able to vote in the April 4 Presidential Preference Primary, voters must be registered by March 4 in person or by mail. The last day to register online using the GeauxVote app is March 14.

Memory lanterns on sale

LAKE ARTHUR - In honor of people affected by cancer, the Jennings Optimist Club is selling LED memory lanterns to be displayed at the upcoming Mardi Gras Cancer Ball. The event raises awareness and funds needed to help families who are fighting cancer.

“After seeing a separate Optimist Club sell the lanterns as part of their Relay for Life event, we thought it was a great idea,” said event chairman Tammy Broussard. “The lanterns will be lit and used as centerpieces at this year’s ball.”

There is a minimum donation of $100 for each lantern.

Three fugitives apprehended by JDSO

A Roanoke man that was wanted in Acadia parish was arrested this week during a routine traffic stop.

According to Jeff Davis Sheriff’s Office (JDSO) Chief Deputy Chris Ivey, Bobby Ray Spratt, 39, of Roanoke, was charged Wednesday with defective equipment, no child restraints, no driver’s license and resisting arrest by refusing to identify. Spratt had several active warrants, as well in Acadia Parish.

Spratt was stopped in his vehicle that was traveling west on West Division Street near South Lake Arthur Avenue.

A Growing Threat

January is Human Trafficking Awareness Month. Communities Against Domestic Abuse (CADA) wants the public to stay aware of the growing threat that can affect small communities such as Jennings.

“For once, Louisiana does not make the top of the list but that does not mean it isn’t happening here,” said Outreach coordinator Cynthia Petry. “With Jennings being right off of the interstate, it is easily possible for runaways or underage victims to find themselves in a bad situation, one that is not easy to get out of.”

HHS announces 2019-20 Homecoming Court

Hathaway High School (HHS) will hosts its annual Homecoming festivities Friday, Jan. 10. HHS will kick off Homecoming events with a pep rally at 8:30 a.m. in Charles F. Groth Gymnasium.

The community is invited to attend.

Activities will take place at HHS. Honored classes will be the classes of 1949, 1959, 1969, 1979, 1989, 1999 and 2009. Jan. 10, an HHS alumni hospitality room will be open for honorees from 5:30-8 p.m.
